The Role
I really enjoyed my internship and the project I worked at. The project I was given was very interesting and busy which allowed me to participate in a range of different jobs on site. Everyone on my team was very helpful and friendly which made the whole experience much more enjoyable.
The people that I worked with were very friendly and helpful during my placement. I wasn't treated like 'the intern' but instead like any other colleague. On my project there were also many graduate engineers, it was nice to have people who were a similar age and who were doing more similar jobs to you.
Any questions or issues I had were always answered or dealt with.
As with any job, my first few days were a lot less busy. However, I was given more jobs as time went on. If I was ever bored and wanted a job to do, asking around would always result in a task to do. There was rarely nothing at all for me to do.
I was given a good amount of responsibility. Usually I would be given a task and then I would either independently do it or share the job with another member of staff. For one week I also had to cover the basics of someones job whilst they were away, this was a much bigger responsibility as I didn't have any help and I was making most of the decisions.
Although I don't think the placement will directly help with what I study at university, it has definitely given me a better understanding of the construction industry and what happens on site. I feel that this extra knowledge will be helpful later when I start a job, whether it be with a contractor or not.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very friendly and I got on well with people. I got to know most people in the office. Being on site can be a bit hectic as people are constantly moving in and out of the office but this was not something that bothered me.
I am a civil engineering student and at the beginning of the internship (for about the first week) I did not do many tasks relating to this as a lot of engineers and staff were away on training. It could have been organised so that the right people were present on my arrival. However, as the placement went on, the organisation improved.
My internship was only 8 weeks long and so there was no need to invest a lot of training in me. I did participate in manual handling training which was nice of the company.
If I were given the chance to work with the company I would have to do their graduate scheme. The scheme sounds good however I am not completely sure about some of the commitments, one of which is that I have to be fully mobile across the UK for the duration of the scheme(3years).
The Culture
Everyone was very social and friendly and I was invited out for events or drinks with some people a couple of times.
I already had a place to stay in London and so I just commuted. I did not socialise much near my area of work as there was not much to do.
I did not go out.
There were a couple of company activities available during my placement however i did not participate in them.
