The Role
The internship was fine at best. It was great to experience what it was like to work at a major bank, however the division I was in wasn't what I expected it to be. Much more time was spent by employees doing admin work/back office roles than I had anticipated.
I got along really well with my team and everyone was always willing to spare a few minutes to chat, regardless of whether they were an MD or an Analyst. Each team has to apply to get an intern for the summer, so I imagine most interns had a similar experience with this.
Each intern has a buddy (An Analyst) and a line manager (Usually a VP). My buddy was very supportive however my manager wasn't in the office a lot of the time as she worked from home sometimes, so there were times I wouldn't see her for 3-4 days.
I had very little to do the majority of the time. If I did have something to do, there usually wasn't even a particular deadline and I could really just hand it in whenever. There were full days where I did nothing other than read a couple of documents I was given and listen in on a couple of phone calls.
Only one piece of work during the whole internship had any real responsibility. Other than that I had no influence on the team and didn't really have an opportunity to show what I can do to contribute to the team.
I definitely improved my Microsoft Office skills which I can take back to uni, and the experience of working in a corporate environment for the first time will stand to me.
