The Role
I have had a really positive experience at Barclays. HR were approachable and made the onboarding process easy. The workload was the perfect amount and the culture was great. I met some nice friends who interned with me here last year on the Spring Week, and we reunited this summer. It was a very inclusive environment and have been given a lot of opportunities to meet people from all over the bank.
I strongly felt valued. My team trusted me with workload, and encouraged me to get "stuck in" from day 1. This made the learning process a lot smoother and I actually felt like I was of use to the team and achieving something, despite just being an intern. I really feel like I have made good friends in the team, and will miss it when I leave.
My manager has been great because he didn't have to micromanage me. He encouraged me to have confidence, get out to client meetings and meet people across the bank. But when I did have questions, he would be there to answer them.
I had days where the workload was definitely more than others, but I never had days with nothing to do. Some tasks required more time than others. I wasn't extremely busy, which was actually good because then I could take my time to learn about the task and get good insight. But I always had long-term goals and tasks to achieve throughout the placement.
I was given a lot of responsibility throughout this internship. I was working independently with a client outside of the bank to externally organize an event whilst my manager and the other point of contact were on holiday. This event needed a push and I was given the responsibility to do so. I felt trusted within the team, which I really appreciated because it is hard to learn and improve without being given responsibility.
My Excel and PowerPoint skills have increased massively, which will be helpful in any job and in my final year of university. I have learnt great time management and working daily, which I think are important aspects. Also, really good to put the theory into practice from university to a working job. There is nothing better than learning the skills to get stuck in a job and really see what you do on a daily basis. I was encouraged to reach out to other members in the bank and network, so your communication skills increase across the internship and your general confidence.
The Company
Very warm, open, collaborate and approachable. My team have been great.
Very organized - we had weekly breakfast meetings with senior leadership members, which was a great way to gain insight into other areas of the bank and to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere. HR have been very good to organize many events and presentations for us.
I feel very invested in because I did the Spring Week and now the Summer Internship, so I can see the time and effort that has gone into recruiting.
Financial Bonus
Through speaking to lots of people in the bank, I found out that there are so many opportunities to move teams and explore other areas. I like that the graduate role has rotations so you can always have the chance to learn about different parts of the bank.
The Culture
very good - I made some great friends here.
it was quite expensive, you need a good 2000 pounds for your accommodation if you do not live In home. travel is also expensive when you use the tube every day.
really good! Canary Wharf has a fantastic atmosphere after work
yes definitely, a lot of sports and networks to join.
