The Role
In general I really enjoyed working at RBC. The people and the culture are great! However, I am used to living in a country where people even more open-minded and friendly so it was at some points still a challenge to be in RBC. Mostly since it is a big bank and you feel kind of small. However, the internship was very interesting and it's a great way to get an insight into on of the big banks in London!
The good thing about RBC is the culture. The people in RBC is so friendly and open. Whenever you help them to solve a problem, they would definitely approach you and say thank you for your help and tell them how it has helped them. I felt very valued by more colleagues and that is an amazing feeling to know that you actually made a difference in your internship!
My team was very good in terms of supporting and guiding me. They tried to set up meetings with a lot of other teams such that I could get an insight to the different areas in the bank. This really helps when you do not know whether you want to work in one team or another.
Fairly busy, not too much. In general the working hours were 8am-18pm which isn't too bad for an investment bank! Some days were more busy than others, but they give you a lot of responsibility so the days which is less busy are the days where you just decide to meet up over a coffee and try to network with people in the bank.
They generally gave me a lot of responsibility, but I guess it also depends on how you are as a person. If you want responsibility and try to go for it, they will definitely let you have it, but it also requires that you show that you can manage your time yourself and that you will ask if you're in doubt about anything.
Since I am not from England, I learned a lot about how it is to work in a large bank as RBC and how it is to move to a foreign country. For me it was a great experience to try to live in London and to figure out how investment banks work. You obtain skills that you will value for life and I am sure that everyone will get something good out of trying to work in RBC.
The Company
I had lots of fun in my team, however it is still banking, so people are generally busy... You cannot really expect anything else from banking, so I would say compared to what I've heard elsewhere it is really a good atmosphere and a comfortable company to be working in. People are always in a good mood!
It was a fairly well organized internship! The only thing I missed at some points were information about the timing of different intern events. And at some point it might have been useful for the interns to have a bigger project in their teams assigned such that they don't get bored and don't feel like they're useful.
I really like the organization and the people within. In a bank with the size of RBC it is always possible to find a suitable job and therefore it is obviously appealing to get a job offer there. Future employment prospects should be fairly good for me, however it is difficult to know before we are actually told anything after our internship has finished.
The Culture
Interns are in general very friendly and want to get to know each other. Not only because it's nice to know other interns when being in your internship, but also because it might be nice to have a good network if you will come back again after. It has been easy to get to know the other students and the fact that HR puts you in groups (for different events) with people from different areas in the business makes it a lot easier to know people across teams.
I am sure it would be easier to find stuff to do if you actually work in the company. For example like volunteering events, training, meeting up somewhere etc... Difficult to say since I didn't really look that much into was there was to do in the company outside of work.
