The Role
This was a very well planned internship which ensured that all interns had a great opportunity to be part of a team and take on projects but also enjoy several social activities throughout the internship. This not only help us bond with our teams but also with the other interns in the class. It was evident that a lot of thought and time had been put into making my project.
Although this varied day to day, on the whole, since I was only doing one project, I was not too busy with work. This is also due to the specific team I was in and it can vary with other teams. The team was very chilled out in their approach and since my project did not affect day to day activities, I did spend a lot of time not being busy.
I had a project which had me starting from scratch and making a webpage using technologies that I had never used in my life. With sufficient help with my teammates, I was leading and shaping the project. It was obvious that a large amount of thought was put into making this project for me and it was split into reasonable sized chunks for me to complete it step by step.
I have now learnt technologies that I had never learnt before. Although I have finished my studies now, I can now apply these skills onto any other job I decide to take in the future. These skills are not only actively sought out for by employers but also assist me in the learning of other new technologies.
The Company
There is always a positive buzz in the office and there is an appropriate balance of joking around but also focusing on work when work gets serious. It can sometimes be loud, so for a person that is used to silence when working can find it difficult to work in such an environment.
There was a perfect balance of social activities and work planned by HR and the teams. There were events throughout the internship which allowed us to get to know seniors on a more friendly basis and meet other teams as well as divisions. The events were delivered in a timely manner and ensured that they did not disrupt project work towards the end of the internship.
As an intern, I was not given any specific training courses to attend apart from some practice questions. This did make it more difficult for me to pick up certain technologies that I had never used before. However, with the physical help of other teammates whenever necessary, I did not feel like I was left on my own to learn something completely new.
Company Parties/Events
Having experienced 10 weeks at this firm, I can see that it would be a great firm to work for. Not only is the atmosphere perfect but also the employees are understanding and do not insist on a hierarchy, which makes it easier to get along with everyone. Alongside this, there are also charitable causes the firm takes part in which make it all the more appealing to work here.
The Culture
There was a mixture of social events planned by HR, the individual teams and also the intern class. Some events kept us separated into our own division but there were enough events where we all got to socialise with completely different departments. It is safe to say that the interns in our department are all really good friends now and we will all be keeping in touch after the internship!
There were a lot of opportunities that were not just made for the interns which we were able to take part in. This let us get a feel for life at the bank as a permanent employee as opposed to a temporary intern. Some activities involved sports and others were celebratory events. This also gave us the opportunity to network with more employees of the bank.
