Corporate Risk & Broking Summer Intern Review

I thoroughly enjoyed the team I was placed into, it gave a good overview of the companies workings. My team were really attentive and supportive of me during my time there.

I had a project that was set out for me from the start, so there was constantly work to do. When I needed help or and questions it was easy to have my query seen to and beyond.

There's a set framework in place to ensure that I would continue to learn about insurance and the company throughout the internship. My manager was very helpful in helping build my internal network to here about further areas of the business.

I always had a decent amount of work to do, and my manager made sure it was always reasonable. I never had to work silly overtime hours and at one point where I was in limbo with my project, they always had something more lined up just in case. I was given the flexibility and freedom to really pile up work for myself or have a bit of a breather.

In the team project I was given, I was able to really run proceedings from time to time and make decisions as I saw fit, just providing I could justify the choice. Guidance was always round the corner if I asked for it. The culmination of this was a call to one of the global teams were I instructed them on how to continue the projects implementation, reviewing their work is how I had envisioned and answering any questions they had a result.

As of of writing, I haven't yet returned to University, but I imagine I'll find team oriented projects a lot easier. The routine and lifestyle that comes with an internship makes me look forward to returning to the more relaxed university lifestyle with a much better work ethic, leaving me very confident in the fact my results will be far higher than my previous year.

In my team and on the floor, it was a very fun atmosphere, very early on I was laughing and joking with the people on the floor during work hours. It especially helped that the World Cup and Love Island were on too, which provided frequent conversation topics.

Very well-organised, continuous events were on each week, with the most prominent being a speaker series where someone fairly senior from each of the business lines and even other segments of the organisation came to talk and highlight their career path and day-to-day work.

There were online courses you could do, but I didn't spend any time on them. The development and training comes more from whatever you can get out of your team. rather than centrally organised.

At the end of the internship, graduate positions are offered, but at the time of writing, I'm unaware of the results. But these positions are there for the taking on the grad scheme.

All the interns on our scheme are socialable so we go out, near once a week as a big group. There were a couple socials organised by the HR team. And in my team personally, very socialable bunch, had a lot of social events with them whether it be birthday lunches, evening drinks or even a summer party the Big bosses house.

London prices, make of that what you will. But when I'm out with the team I haven't paid a penny, so there's an upside to it and also a downside.

Evening life is great, but I never went clubbing during the internship, drinks and chatting or maybe a small event were enough for me. But you are in central London, if you can think of it it probably exists.

There were a few kncoking around if you networked properly and knew a few people then yes. But over the eight weeks its hard to judge that one properly. I got involved in a five-a-side league with a colleague from my team and a load of external people by chance.
