The Role
I enjoyed the placement very much as it allowed me to gain insight into the structure of an investment bank. The learning curve was very steep as I was confronted with new products in Equity Capital Markets ranging from IPO's to Rights Issues. This was definitely one of the most rewarding aspects of the internship.
I felt valued by my colleagues, and the atmosphere in my team was great. We had the Summer Party which was thoroughly enjoyable as well as a variety of intern events with full-time employees which allowed you to get to know people and showed how much the bank cares about attracting and retaining talent.
I received a lot of support from all of my colleagues. This applied not only to the daily work but also to the presentations which we had to give throughout the internship - people took the time to answer any questions I had, no matter how trivial.
Towards the end of the internship, the intensity of the workload increased markedly as you were given more and more responsibility. However, this was a rewarding experience as you got more exposure to the processes and products dealt with in the division and you got to experience what an analyst does on a daily basis.
Initially, I was given less experience than towards the end of the internship as my confidence picked up and I learnt more about the products and processes.
The training I received in the first week of the internship - especially in accounting - will be very useful for me in my future studies. Moreover, I learnt a lot more about the functioning of markets and investment banks - as well as a variety of financial products.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very good. Everyone got on with each other and there were a lot of events for the team to socialise, ranging from watching World Cup matches together to the Summer Party and Friday evening drinks. Everyone came from very diverse backgrounds which made the conversations interesting.
The work placement was very well organised across the capital markets division, culminating in the Summer Project which we did with Debt Capital Markets. This allowed us to gain insight into a broader range of products than only Equity Capital Markets and was an amazing way to end the internship.
