    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very well organised and a large cohort of interns allowed for great collaboration and enjoyment. The role was varied from day to day which meant that you were constantly meeting new people within the bank and building a sophisticated network which meant that in the future you became better connected to different teams in Barclays.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The tasks given to me were sufficiently challenging and not just menial work that would have lead to little progression. I was given the freedom and confidence to work alone on objectives and didnt have to just shadow another member of the team. I was also given constant feedback on my work which allowed for the most growth possible.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager and the rest of the team offered lots of time and support to help me start to understand my roles from the first day. The team were generous in helping me when I had issues with IT or needed knowledge for how to go about certain tasks.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was given challenging tasks which meant that most of my 9 weeks I spent working on these. Occasionally there would be periods where I would be awaiting resources and support from others in different teams for me to continue working but even in this team I was given other jobs to do which exposed me to even more of the banks operations.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the chance to do present my ideas and work to very senior members of the bank which was a great experience as I got some great feeback from this. At no point did I feel like I was having to be watched/ controlled and I was allowed to proceed with my work freely which allowed for me to be as creative as possible and allowed me to get the best results possible.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although my degree of Mathematical Physics is very different to the tyoe of work I was doing at Barclays I still believe my time in the internship has helped me to understand what I see my career being moving forward. I was also able to meet other people within the bank including data scientist and this is now something I am persuing more at university.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Having interned at Radbroke park the office had a campus feeling to it and every day there are different events happening including pop up bbqs and car shows. This gives a great atmosphere in and around the office and it seems like everyone is happy to be working from Radbroke hall.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The HR team ensured that there were plenty of opportunities for us to meet different stakeholders within the bank and take part in Learning/ Networking sessions with these people. In addition HR made sure that performance reviews took place each month to ensure that each intern recieved constant feedback with regard to their work which was very useful.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Since I took part in only a 9 week internship it meant that there wasnt heaps of time for development/ learnings to take place. Despite this we did recieve a 2 day training day in London at the start of the internship to allow for us to quickly learn about all the functions and operations of the bank.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There is plenty of opportunity for careers within Barclays among many locations. There are graduate programmes available where the intern can recieve an offer where they go on rotation each year with a different team. Within technology at a Financial Services organisation there is a really vast range of roles that one can do.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Since there were 40+ interns in Radbroke Hall it allowed for us to get to know each other very well and get together frequently. This further allowed us to learn from each other about the bank and the opportunities within Barclays. It is likely that many of us will remain friends afterwards.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Knutsford as an area is quite expensive but I am staying in Chester and commuting which is much cheaper. Barclays does offer a generous relocation allowance for all interns however which means that we are given money for the cost of living within Knutsford and the sureounding area which is a little expensive.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Knutsford has a couple of bars but Manchester which isnt too far away has much more variety as you would expect. The places in Knutsford however are great for after work drinks or weekend get togethers which we have done in the past and we did manage to get together in Manchester a few times too.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I personally took part in Touch Rugby matches at lunchtime but there were many more options available including Football, Cricket, Tennis, Charity events and many more. There is also a gym available on site which many colleagues use. There has also been a summer social where food and drinks were heavily subsidised for all staff.
