    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • An amazing 10 weeks. Everyone extremely friendly, the office was incredible and found the work very interesting.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team was very welcoming and overall I felt that I was valued. There was lots of support and feedback for any project I undertook, which helped my personal improvement as well as the quality of my output.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was highly supportive and more than happy to answer any questions I might have, even if they weren't strictly work related. During the early stages of the internship especially, my manager helped bring me up to speed and gave me some really good reading material.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During the initial part of the internship it was mainly learning and so I wasn't involved in many projects. However, as my time at the firm progressed I found myself becoming increasingly busy with numerous projects. Equally, there are tonnes of opportunities for networking outside of your immediate team to keep you occupied.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Similarly, I found that my level of responsibly increased massively towards the end of the internship. For instance, I was entrusted with setting up and attending external interviews which were costing the company a substantial sum given that this involved bringing in external assistance.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My basic IT skills such as Excel and PowerPoint have improved manifold and are highly relevant both to every day life and to my degree. Further, my understanding of the role of an investment bank and finance in general have come on a long way. Which is always useful given the financial nature of my degree.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As mentioned previously, the atmosphere was very friendly. In particular I found that everyone was more than willing to answer questions and most people genuinely seemed to want to help you learn and improve.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well structured. We had an induction followed by training in the first week. Also we were provided with a manager, mentor and buddy who were all able to assist you and provide advice during the internship.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were 2 days of formal training which while of very high quality perhaps could have been slightly longer and more focused on the roles we were going into. However, the informal training was excellent - we were given weekly talks from different teams in finance, opportunities for shadowing and the friendly atmosphere was conducive to learning.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Would love to work at the firm and would recommend Nomura to anyone interested in working for an investment bank. Taking an internship certainly helps to improve the chances of attaining a graduate role at the firm.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was very impressive. There were semi-weekly drinks on the 'terrace' (effectively a rooftop garden in the office which was amazing). Also there was a bar literally 10 seconds from the office where all the interns would gather after work on most Fridays and some Thursdays.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lived at home so can't comment on that. However, the cost of food and drink was incredibly expensive.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Central London so always a lot going on, including a multitude of nice bars, pubs and clubs.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, I took part in 5-aside football every week, there was a charity football tournament and also a charity fundraising competition.
