The Role
I had a brilliant time on my internship, my team were extremely helpful and gave me great guidance. I learnt a lot both technically and about my project. I also learnt what my personal strengths and weaknesses are. I was put on a demanding project that required me to work closely with both the client and my project team however I feel that this enhanced my experience.
I felt extremely valued by my project team, I was given lots of responsibility and consequently people were depending on me to complete my job to a high standard. As a result, many of my colleagues stated how much I would be missed when I left the project and how valuable my work had been.
I was given lots of support by my project team, I never felt like I couldn't ask questions. My team were very understanding that I was an intern and tried to explain why thing were being done rather than just asking me to complete tasks. I was also given great support by my people manager, he was always there to help me if I had any questions.
I was extremely busy on a daily basis and was sometimes required to work late to complete tasks to a high standard. However, my team always appreciated my contributions and were grateful of the extra hours that I worked. My team always ensured that I had enough work and work was fairly shared between team members.
I was given a reasonably large amount of responsibility during my internship. I had several weekly responsibilities relating to programme management and team meetings that meant that my team was relying on me to complete certain tasks before deadlines. I feel that I had I been working there longer my team would have happily given me more responsibility.
I learned some valuable technical skills, such as PowerPoint, Excel and Visio that will help me when completing my dissertation and assessments during my final year at university. I also think these skills will help me in future employment as these programs are widely used in the business world and good knowledge of them is expected.
The Company
I spent all of my project at the client office which had predominantly PwC staff in. There was a fun atmosphere whereby everyone helped each other, everyone chatted throughout the day and everyone could approach each other. It has made me want to work in that environment in the future.
From applying to the firm to leaving the whole project has been extremely well organised. The student recruitment process was extremely quick and the student recruitment staff were very helpful. Since being in the firm, the resourcing and exit process has been well managed and I never felt that I was forgotten.
I experienced an extensive 3 day off-site induction at the start of the internship. I felt that PwC cared about the training that we received. However, more Management Consulting specific training could have been provided during the induction. I did not receive any further formal training after the initial induction however I could have used the optional resources to further my personal and technical skills.
National Travel
They are extremely appealing, I would love to work at PwC in the future. The firm is fantastic, it has great opportunities and everyone I have worked with and met has been extremely helpful and friendly and genuinely wants to see you progress. I couldn't recommend PwC as a firm more.
The Culture
After work on a Friday some of the interns went out for drinks in Birmingham. There could have been more organised events between the interns to encourage us getting together and sharing our experiences. The Consulting practice also organised a leaving social for the interns. The Birmingham office also organised monthly socials.
The cost of living was quite cheap if you stayed slightly out of the centre of Birmingham. Transport is also quite cheap around the region. Socialising was more expensive as the office is located in the financial area of Birmingham however there are lots of places to socialise near the office.
The nightlife was quite good in Birmingham and more affordable than London. There are plenty of pubs and bars to choose from around the office that are within walking distance of the office and train stations. People at the firm were also happy to suggest places to go out as well.
It was difficult to get involved in any activities because I wasn't based in my local office, I was based at my client site. However, I have heard of lots of opportunities available at the firm from volunteering to sports so I would definitely be interested in getting involved in these.
