The Role
The placement was enjoyable due to the networking element, as I found I met many different people from various walks of life who I enjoyed learning from. I had never heard of some of the roles so it was very beneficial to chat to them. I also enjoyed day to day work, although overall the best part of the internship was when I was off desk at meetings etc.
I felt very valued and welcomed by the team. Everyone treated me as an equal and were happy to help in any way they could. I never felt like a typical intern who was only there to make tea and coffee, they gave me actual valuable tasks to do and kept me busy.
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was always more than happy to answer any queries I had and made sure I had contacts in the office when she wasn't in. Other members of the team were equally supportive and often checked up on me to make sure I was getting on OK. Although I often worked using my own initiative, there was always someone to contact if needed.
I always had multiple tasks to be getting on with at any one time which kept me busy most of the time. However, on Fridays I was often the only one in the office which meant that those days were particularly slow as it was hard to stay motivated under those conditions.
I organised meetings and revamped the Hive page which were quite important, although I know that those could have easily been done by another member of the team. However, I suppose if I had done these incorrectly then it would've caused problems so the team therefore did give me some responsibility.
I learned a lot about how to talk to people and get the best out of them as a result of various tasks I undertook during my placement. This means I am now more confident talking in front of people, which will be valuable in third year when presenting my dissertation. I will also use skills developed such as using my own initiative.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly, however it was not very stimulating on Fridays when I was often the only one in the office. People in separate teams were also friendly to me and made the effort to check up on me. I also liked the informal dress code which made me feel more comfortable.
There was a good structure with mid placement and end of placement reviews, as well as weekly learning. My manager had already prepared several long-term tasks for me to get on with once I started which meant I was always busy even from the first week. Correspondence from Lloyds was good throughout.
I feel that Lloyds made a large investment in me, I even went on a course off site to improve my skillset. This is furthered by the investment already made in me by the Scholars scheme. Considering there is no obligation to work at Lloyds after uni I was surprised by how much was invested.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I really liked the overall experience and would be very interested to find out more about the different roles available. Even though I enjoyed my time, I feel there are probably other roles I would enjoy more as I realised how huge the company is over the course of my internship.
The Culture
The interns organised socials such as watching the world cup which I enjoyed. Since I wasn't in halls I found there was not as much of a social element and I had to make more of an effort to socialise - it would be good if Lloyds organised more events for all interns to create more of a community. For example, the boat party was really good and great for networking.
London is extremely expensive, although we did find ways of cutting costs to allow us to do more things. Since I already go to uni in London I was not shocked by the cost, though I know other interns were. However, the cost is worth it to experience living and working in London.
London is the best city I've been to in terms of nightlife. It has some of the best clubs in the world (Fabric, Studio 338 et.). however it is very expensive so not possible to visit these kinds of places all the time. Regardless, even the bars in the city are amazing and I had a great summer exploring them on weekends.
There was one event, the boat party, organised by Lloyds. Apart from that there wasn't much to get involved with at all which was disappointing, considering that my office had no other interns. This made it hard to network - luckily I met some other interns at the induction and stayed in touch.
