The Role
My assigned team for the internship duration was fantastic! They prioritised using modern and effective technology solutions to development of software and this made the whole experience much more immersive for me as a developer. Also, everyone I have met here has been absolutely lovely and made my experience all the better. Lastly, the choice in Deutsche Side project (Semantic Analysis) was great, it had great potential to learn a lot for both BA and Developer roles.
My team was amazing and they looked after me so well. I am genuinely happy with my experience at Deutsche due partly to them. They also focussed on my needs and desires from the experience and would focus on giving me projects that I would benefit from.
A lot of time and dedication to me was displayed by my managers and they never made me feel bad for asking questions or requesting help.
I would find myself working at the desk most of the day and spending the remaining few hours either focussing on the Deutsche Side Project (Sentiment Analysis) or reading research literature around Computer Science to pass time . I felt like this balance was great as it would keep me productive on all fronts I am interested in.
I would say the code that I contributed in developing was of semi-importance. Two of the projects I did in terms of development were eventually deployed after some testing, and so it was definitely useful and benefitted my Deutsche Team. However, I would have preferred more "significant" projects just so I would get more experience in working with important deadlines/deployment workflows and could also potentially integrate Test-Driven Development to make sure code was written with validation and verification checks. (better robustness and integrity in development)
I felt that learning Go Lang (a programming language) was extremely beneficial to my Computer Science background. Additionally, the types of technologies I encountered and problems I solved would greatly benefit me as a Computer Scientist. However, I had approached both my managers in my team about the potential to do some Machine Learning projects during my time here, as it greatly benefits my degree. Unfortunately, they were not able to arrange this but they did try which is what matters to me.
The Company
Very chilled atmosphere which as a developer means a lot. I prefer calm and generally quiet spaces to work in because my work usually requires focus and concentration. I found that there were no problems in the office regarding this. Additionally, the choice in booking rooms/pods for working in was very useful during my time here.
I encountered no real problems with internship organisation. Although I have heard some experience of other interns going through some big issues with being assigned work and such. The only problem I had was that my Deutsche Access Card was not set up properly before I arrived and additionally, it did not work on most technology floors until halfway through the internship.
I feel as though my Deutsche Site Reliability Team tried to make sure I get the best experience possible with what they could give me. They would consistently try to educate me more than I would need just for the task at hand, to make sure I take away a lot from this experience. Also, I feel that the HR/Grad Recruitment department invested heavily in trying to organise speakers and events for us to benefit from.
Company Parties/Events
I feel that Deutsche does offer a competitive salary for Graduates, but is on the lower end compared to other competing organisations. However, I would hope that it would be possible in trying to choose teams to join/enter during the Grad Programme as it would make it a much more desirable employment prospect.
The Culture
Yes, the interns this year were all amazing. There was a lot of collaboration and support with the current interns and it felt very inclusive for everyone. There was also a lot of events organised outside of work between us interns, to provide better bonding opportunities.
Canary Wharf is generally an expensive place to travel to and eat in.
Canary Wharf has a few great pubs nearby.
I wouldn't say many opportunities, but there were a few speaker events, the initial bowling and networking events, and recently, the women in tech breakfast. However, apart from a few, I feel there were hardly any events I was emailed to participate in. By these opportunities, I assume Deutsche Bank specific events and such.
