The Role
The internship is well organized in general. I had various trainings/speaker events/networking sessions and met many other interns/colleagues who will be my lifetime friends. The internship experiences depends critically on teams and line managers, and my line manager gave me projects that sufficiently challenged me. However, there were some staff-changing events in my team that inevitably rendered my experience not as enjoyable as it could have been.
Colleagues are very friendly and helpful, and the working environment is very inclusive, even on the busy trading floors. This is the best part of my internship experience.
My line manager was crazily busy, so I didn't get much chance talking to her. Nevertheless, I could always ask her questions when I needed to, so the guidance was sufficient for the work.
My work was project-based. I was very busy on a few days and was not that busy on most other days. In general the working hour is 8:30am to 6pm so I'd say it was well balanced.
I wasn't granted access to the systems for my team's daily job and hence wasn't much involved in the team's usual responsibility. Nevertheless, I was given some important works including giving two presentations for wider teams and senior management.
I didn't have any finance courses before and hence the financial knowledge (the market, structure of a bank, asset classes and traded products) developed during the internship is definitely invaluable for me.
The Company
I sat on the trading floor so it could get loud and noisy sometimes. But overall the atmosphere was good and very inclusive.
As I mentioned in the first question the internship was well organized overall. Interns had received lots of trainings/speaker events/networking opportunities and a decent induction as well. However, I'd expect a better end-of-the-internship event.
I believe the company invested a lot into us interns given all the trainings/speaker events/online courses available for us to learn. We also had opportunities to meet and talk to some of the most senior leaders in the company, such as the chairman and the CRO.
I like Barclays and will value an opportunity to work for the organization in the future. I'll definitely apply again once I finish my undergraduate studies and start my masters.
The Culture
As I said I had developed very good relationship with other interns and we supported each other throughout the internship.
It is London so the cost of living is indeed very high. However given the remunerations we received it is perfectly fine to have a decent life here.
I suppose the nightlife in Canary Wharf is great given so many bars and restaurants in the area. However I'm not a person for nightlife and only went to a bar once after work, so I don't think I'm the right person to judge.
There are many opportunities outside work. You can always choose to go to the gym or cycle back home after work. There are also many organizations/associations/societies in the company and they'll organize events, such as LGBT events that everybody can get involved in. However, the chance of having activities outside work for interns is limited.
