The Role
Overall I did enjoy my internship. Very friendly fellow interns and colleagues which is reflective of the very flat culture as a whole at MUFG (with senior management very approachable). Pace of learning particularly at the start was very good. Some aspects of the work did become a bit manual/repetitive towards the end of the internship however.
Generally, very highly. Most colleagues did make a significant effort to get to know you and were very willing to give up their time to help you. Even if they were in a completely different department, managers and colleagues of all seniority would be happy to meet with you. Colleagues in own department I felt valued me highly enough to give a significant amount of work, but this was built up too. Colleagues did value their personal relationships with you, taking time out to meet you and see if you were ok even when you had stopped working with them.
Variable between rotations. Support in first rotation was outstanding with managers constantly giving you learning and shadowing sessions. Entire team were always very willing to take time out to teach you more. Were tasked with a presentation which was then followed up with questioning to consolidate knowledge. Managers in second rotation did provide some guidance but was more limited and generally had to approach and directly ask for it.
A lot of the time the initiative was placed on you to go out and seek extra work. There was also an emphasis, particularly in the first rotation, on independent learning where during free time you were expected to go away and research to consolidate what you had been shown. Could have been busier but was nice that you weren't overstretched and days weren't just full of manual tasks, with minimal learning benefits.
High amount for junior position. Was given chance of producing P+ls for traders, expected to produce and deliver presentations to test knowledge. Strong emphasis on independent learning and tasks, with work and projects set which you were then expected to go away and complete. Amount of responsibility given generally increased over time based on how much you had learnt/ how successfully you completed previous tasks.
Skills have minimal relevance to degree studies as unrelated areas. A lot of the skills gained are highly relevant for a career in finance however. Gained strong excel skills which are highly transferrable and built a great product knowledge across asset classes which will be useful for a future career in the financial markets.
The Company
Generally good. Most people are friendly, although day to day is relatively quiet as most people get on with work independently.
Generally good with most tasks and events planned in advance. Structure of choices of second rotation was a little unclear and only communicated a week or two prior to start.
Training and learning was one of the best strengths of the internship, with a week and a half training at the start as well as other shadowing and learning sessions.
Financial Bonus
Good, with all interns having a chance at a full time graduate role.
The Culture
Yes other interns were very keen to socialise and meet up after work/at weekends. Only a couple of formal social events though.
Relatively high as is Central London in general.
London nightlife is diverse and obviously down to the individual to explore. Good central office location.
These did seem fairly limited. Was a few sports sessions but weren't really advertised and so were down to individuals to seek out/reliant on other team members being already involved.
