The Role
The level of responsibility that I was given in this internship is something that I really enjoyed about my summer internship with Barclays. I had the chance to work on and improve the functionality of production-level applications, as well as work on improving the team's development process to make it more efficient.
I felt really valued by my colleagues and people in my team over the course of my summer internship. From being able to work on applications that were already in production, I felt that I was trusted with the work I was given as well as the level of responsibility that my colleagues gave.
My line manager was someone during the summer internship that I could always approach, and ask any questions that I had about the work that I was given or any problems that I was facing. Almost always my questions would be answered and when I needed some help my line manager would guide me in the right direction.
Due to the nature of the work there were times that I didn't have much to do. This was either due to not having the right permissions to access a particular platform or software, or not having any user stories to work on. There were, however, other times when I was very busy.
The level of responsibility as mentioned earlier was great. I had the chance to work on team's user stories and help them with any problems they were facing or any bugs that needed immediate attention. As well as working on a proof of concept to see if it was a viable solution.
There are a lot of skills that I feel that I have developed over the course of the internship. One of which is effective communication, from being able to convey my questions to the work that I have been doing to my team and colleagues. I know for sure that this will assist me in my degree when needing to work on my final year project and being able to convey my work to my supervisor.
The Company
The general atmosphere of my office was really friendly. However I also found it to be quite dull. I guess that the working atmosphere varies in which department and floor you work on at Barclays. I was placed in back office where the atmosphere isn't the most exciting, although it was definitely a place that I felt comfortable working in.
I think my internship is really well organised. Throughout the internship, HR had organised multiple talks throughout from seniors in different areas of the bank, where they would give an overview of the work in their area. I found those talks extremely helpful. There were also other organised events such as hackathons and networking events. My work during the internship was also well organised, since my work was split into separate objectives that I had to work towards throughout.
For the first two days of my internship, us interns had the chance to have some training. Those two days were mainly focused on personal training and development, and to improve the personal brand. The first day was spent on improving our brand and talks about how the bank works. The second was spent working in a group to create and pitch a business idea.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
I have currently not been told about if I have got my offer or not. That will most likely be at the end of my internship. I do, however, believe that I have a good chance with them, since after speaking to my manager about my progress and performance throughout the internship, I think I have a good chance.
