The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship as it has allowed me to see a professional environment of my chosen sector. Staff were friendly and supportive and I never experienced any rude or condescending tones as I have previously experienced as a customer in another bank. How they treat every one is lovely considering the sector.
The colleagues were a lot nicer than I expected bank staff to be.
If I needed help with any tasks (or even answers in relation to the office building) both my team and others were happy to help.
I was always asked if I had enough to do or needed more, as you have to bare in mind that you can only be given tasks that come in. However, at the same time you are given modules to complete by the Bank so that they are certain we understand their procedures.
I was tasked with amending legal facility agreements before and after circulation, these were of coursed checked after my completion as there is little room for error in the legal department. Every thing has to be done in line with company procedures and on the Legal team, all staff have to carry out work in line with each other for consistency.
The skills I developed and training I received are extremely useful beyond my degree studies as it has allowed me to see both a banking and legal environment for the first time, setting high expectations of what to expect from other companies in the future. As I was on the legal team it has further fuelled my study aspirations to complete a GDL after graduating.
The Company
Every one in the office is lovely and friendly. How ever, as I was set in one of the offices and not the branches there isn't a lot of constant noise as people individually work on most things. How ever, lunch times and nearing home time there is a bit more nosie!
The internship was extremely well organised e.g. Assessment day, Induction day. Reflection day; as we were given the agendas for the days so nothing ever came as a shock/surprise. They are extremely good at wanting us to know that there is nothing to be nervous about, there is an extremely friendly atmosphere!
As the internship is for a 2 month period, the training is given on a daily basis as this is typical throughout a banking career any way! Even full time staff are learning new things every day as things are constantly changing in the banking sector. This is good as it keeps the work interesting.
A few interns are continuing work here even after their contract ends (extending) as they have enjoyed it that much. Typically, people can work here throughout their final year of study also or even come back after they graduate. It is good to discuss this at a good time so that the staff know.
The Culture
The interns are tasked with a presentation for the end of their time here, this allowed many opportunities for us all to meet with each other to share our experiences here at Handelsbanken. This also allowed us to organise social events if we wanted to e.g. drinks. As there are quite a few interns, you don't always get to see each one unless they are in your presentation group.
Manchester Central
Manchester Central
The bank holds monthly social events that all are welcome to and the interns were also invited to attend if they wanted. This is for all the departments so there is a wide variety who attend. These are typically help central so that is easily accessible to most people who work here.
