The Role
I really enjoyed my experience as the level of initial responsibility was much higher than expected. I was given work that was actually required by the team, and that was eventually found to be useful. The team was also very friendly, and made efforts to include me in daily conversation.
I indeed felt valued by my colleagues as the work that was given to me was genuinely required by the team and made use of in terms of being shown to clients as well as other analysts in other countries that we are present in. Aside from my work, I felt valued as an individual as well.
The work was partially self-guided, I would say. My manager laid out a draft of what he required and told me how to structure my report (as I interned in Equity Research). The content itself was 90% my ideas and research. Whenever I was stuck or couldn't figure something out I was helped a lot though.
Very!! It was actually quite hard balancing the intern speaker events alongside my work, even though I only had a report to work on (as opposed to desk work). There were days that I had to literally grab lunch from just the canteen, but also days where I got to sit out in the sun and enjoy my meal. It really depends on how you balance your work, but you are given a fair workload.
A lot. I didn't expect this much responsibility, and thought the work I was doing was just for internal purposes or just to judge my ability. the work I did was actually used by my manager to show clients or other analysts. All the interns generally were surprised at how much responsibility they had. Managers usually have to "pitch" for an intern on their desk, so if you get a project it usually will be a good / relevant one.
Not that much in my degree studies, but I think the point of the internship is to go beyond the classroom and learn what university might not otherwise teach you. In terms of "beyond," it's taught me a lot more skills applicable to the work place and especially accounting skills.
The Company
Friendly, but also Research just isn't as lively as the trade floor. People are chatty and talk on the phone to clients etc. Beyond that it is on the quieter side I would say.
Really well. In terms of the project we were given as well as extracurricular intern events. A good mix of social, speaker events and events with colleagues in the department. It was summer so a lot of social events in general. We also had reviews scheduled half way and then at the end which was helpful.
We had a five days of training before we started on the desk. This was helpful to gain a high-level perspective on desk work. During the internship we then had Bloomberg training, and multiple training sessions on how to use specialised programmes / software such as iQ and Thomson Reuters Datastream.

Really appealing. Its commitment to Research is clear and the firm is really big in terms of the size of its research department as well. The managers seem like they help foster junior talent, so I would definitely think highly of it in terms of my future employment prospects here.
The Culture
Average I would say. One social every two weeks if I had to put a number to it. In terms of interns, we went out for lunch every day (or grabbed lunch) and organised our own drinks + dinner, but that was pretty much up to us. A lot of socials initially on but they kinda died down a bit eventually.
Expensive. £6 lunch usually
Okay! It's the City not the West-End so more bars than clubs. Good number of bars around, and some we went to for drinks after work.
Not that much, we were pretty focused on work.
