The Role
Enjoyed the banter in the team but was very hard work
Given a lot of responsibility right from day one. I would say this is what sets Macquarie apart from many IBs - I sat next to top guy in my team for a lot of the time
Very good support from management
As expected, was very busy all the time, working through lunch and dinner most days. Didn't leave before 9pm ever and usually was at least 11pm before I got a cab
As mentioned, given good responsibility, and by the end, was sending out weekly client emails without supervision
Extremely good experience where I leant a lot of skills that have already been useful in subsequent job
The Company
For an Investment Bank, very good. Obviously, high sress at time, but on the whole not too competitive an atmosphere
First week training could have been better organised by HR but team threw me straight in at the deep end
Week's training at the start and then just on-the-job training at a level I don't think I'll ever experience again!
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Offered position but decided it's not the industry for me. However, if I was going into investment banking, I would definitely choose Macquarie and can't recommend them highly enough if you want to get into it
The Culture
Too busy generally but still made some good friends
London is very pricey
Good selection of bars and never far from a club
There were opportunities but not many people take part in them as they are so busy!
