The Role
I really enjoyed getting to know my colleagues and had a great time learning about the different aspects of corporate banking. I hope to be invited back again for the graduate programme. I really enjoyed learning about relationship management and liked that I had the opportunity to meet customers and learn about their individual needs.
I enjoyed doing work for my colleagues that I knew would add value to their work lives. My colleagues were all very welcoming and did their best to involve me in as much work as possible. My colleagues were very supportive and were great to work with. I hope to work with them again in the future
My manager was always there to support me when needed. I always had somebody to go to when I was stuck with my work or I needed advice regarding my role at Santander. My manager gave me a lot of constructive criticism that has helped me develop and grow as an intern
I was fairly busy, I had enough work to do but I did not feel overwhelmed by the work that was given to me. I was allowed to take frequent breaks when I was doing big projects and never found myself to be bored or stressed because of my work.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility. The programme was very independent but I still had senior employees to support me where I lacked experience. I was allowed to work independently and was given a degree of creative freedom when it came to my projects, however my work was still reviewed by senior managers before it was put forward
I have learnt a lot of transferable skills from my time at Santander. I have had the opportunity to learn more about excel and have learnt some basic excel functions such as VLOOKUP and creating pivot tables. This will be very useful for my degree. I have also improved my time management skills and my team building skills.
The Company
It was a fairly relaxed atmosphere. People are kind to each other and support each other's work. Nobody is willing to betray their colleagues and managers are very supportive of analysts taking time to focus on their personal career goals such as external examinations and training. It was a very fun environment with frequent social events and team building activities
The internship was very well organised. There were weekly catch up sessions with my manager where I was given feedback. There was a biweekly and an end of internship review where I was told where I can improve and what I am doing well. There were also frequent seminars and talks from different teams within the bank
The company pays about £50 a month that can go towards personal development programmes of the employee's choice. They also let me take considerable time off to visit other offices and other teams and work with them for a little while. THis allowed me to a get a more well rounded view of the organisation as a whole
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
the organisation is very supportive of junior employees and will do their best to employ as many interns onto the graduate programme as possible. People are promoted within the organisation fairly quickly and managers are very supportive of this. Santander does its best to support the career ambitions of its employees
The Culture
The other interns were very fun and sociable. We all regularly went out for drinks together after work and spent most of our lunch hours together. All of the other interns were always open to doing something social together and were all very welcoming and friendly.
I worked in London and so the cost was relatively higher than it would be in the regions. I bought a £138 monthly zone 1-2 travel card and also paid for lunch every day. The firm does not contribute to any of this, however it is possible to find fairly affordable accommodation in London if you know the right people/
The interns did not participate in any social events that ran very late as we would mostly meet on week days
The interns were given a corporate social responsibility project where we raised money for our partner charities, barnardo's and age uk. This allowed us to plan a lot of events outside of work such as a 7 a side football match for all of our colleagues and a fun run.
