The Role
During this placement I was given a wide range of exposure to the investment bank and the work that they do. Their rotational programme is great for anybody who knows they have an interest in banking and finance but isn't truly sure which area suits them best. I cannot recommend the exposure and experience of this internship enough.
Santander creates a very welcoming environment within which colleagues are always willing to help others learn and to share their knowledge, experience and skills.
Santander provides constant support both on a professional and personal level helping employees to develop their skills for career progression as well as to benefit the organisation. I feel they could have provided slightly more frequent feedback, however this is something they are aware of and working on. Even during my 10 weeks there I saw them working hard to improve their feedback processes.
During my 10 week programme I was given wide variety of small tasks which allowed me to gain an insight into the work that they do. In addition to this they also organised frequent meetings with people from various areas in the bank for me to widen my insight.
This programme allows interns to take responsibility for their own work whilst still having the full support and guidance of permanent members of the team. This allows for vast amounts of learning whilst feeling confident that should you need it the support is there.
I feel that the skills I have learnt at Santander will assist me greatly into my final year of my degree and beyond graduation. The skills they provide you with are not just focused on technical knowledge but also on softer relationship skills and presentation skills. In addition to this through the shadowing of Santander employees I have gained an insight into the skills I need to improve during my last year of University to allow me to be a strong graduate candidate.
The Company
The atmosphere within the office is hard working but friendly and relaxed. People are free to manage their own time and are trusted to balance their responsibilities. Allowing for a good work life balance.
The internship is well planned and has been thoroughly thought through to allow interns to gain the greatest exposure possible in the 10 weeks.
The entire internship programme is design around personal development and exposure within the banking sector. I feel the 10 weeks we had were a investment by Santander into us as candidates.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Opportunities for recruitment into the graduate programme and at junior level are strong for those participating in the internship scheme.
The Culture
Yes, social events were put on for graduates and interns throughout the internship programme. We also had social events within the teams in which we were rotating. Santander set up a buddy system within which interns were matched with a graduate or junior employee which helped introduce us all into the great social circles that Santander have.
As expected for Central London
A wide range or bars, restaurants and nightclubs are within walking distance.
There are many activities around the area after work. Regents park is next to the office and offers many fitness classes in the evening.
