The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. As I came from a non financial background, it was extremely interesting for me to see the day to day organisation of a bank and the different branches which make up Santander UK. I would definitely recommend the Risk division at Santander to anyone as I really feel that I made a family out of my colleagues.
My colleagues were all extremely welcoming from the word go. On my first day, they took me out for lunch and were so welcoming that they took another intern. The continually check up on me and make sure that I understand everything, as well as answering all of my inane questions whatever they may be.
The support and guidance given to me by my manager was second to none. I have had many jobs but it was here, that I felt myself valued. I felt as if I could trust my manager with anything and that any problems I could come to her and she would sort it out to the bets of her ability.
I was quite busy during the day, I was always allowed some time to just plan my day and de brief with my manager. I was able to fit in time for my csr and to have regular scheduled lunches with other interns. My days were quite flexible and I really enjoyed that.
I was given a lot of responsibility, within the risk department. I ended up doing things that would be shown to senior management within my first few weeks. I was also assigned projects, in which I had to review different things and highlight the risks, which could have company wide effects.
When I entered Santander UK, I had no past experience in using excel or anything to do with retail or investment banking, apart from what I knew as a customer. Santander provided me with the opportunities to learn how to use excel correctly. I can now make use various functions which will be immensely useful as I go forward.
The Company
it was really good! Everyone within my team was extremely friendly and that extended throughout the whole office. Colleagues from different teams that I had met once, continued to check on me throughout the 10 weeks. Whenever I wanted to visit another department, everyone was really accommodating and welcoming, which was different to what I thought it would be like.
In regards to my experience, it was extremely organised, when I came in on my first day everything was set up. I was able to slide right in and start working. Within a few days, I had different visit days organised having explained my preferences and what I wanted to get out of my internship.
As Santander, have their own knowledge portal, everything was really easy to find. When I wanted to know more about a division, before or after going on a visit day, it was really easy to discover more about the division because all the policies and procedures were available on the staff portal.

Extremely appealing, with grad jobs in every area, as well as the ability to take secondments all over the UK and abroad, working as a graduate in Santander seems exciting. With a trip planned to the headquarters of Grupo Santander during our different rotations, there are very exciting and appealing job prospects.
The Culture
Among the fellow placements students, we created different group chats and email threads using our different locations and charity groups. I was able to make a close group of friends within my intern cohort, we have lunch together and really bond over out intern experiences within the bank. We even experienced nights out together.
I am from London, so I am used to the costs. However socialising within the capital is not cheap.
Due to working in central London, there were a variety of pubs and bars open till late and were accommodating to workers.
not really, unless it was organised by us as interns, there want a lot available.
