The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Savills. My internship took place in Guildford in their Residential Development team. My team got me involved from day one and made sure I had enough work to do and ensured I was happy and looked after. They were a company and team to work for.
My colleagues would go out of their way to ensure I had jobs to do and at times would take longer to show me how to do jobs when they could have done it themselves in the time! They valued my opinions on matters and treated me with great respect like I was one of them.
My supervisor and mentors were great at checking up on how I was doing with work, work load and how I was getting on with the team. They regularly checked up on my diary to make sure I was busy enough and that I was getting involved in a range of tasks to diversify my experience with them.
I had a perfect balance of work loads most days. When the office was busy I had plenty to do and everyone ensured I had tasks to do and that I had sufficient work load that I was happy doing. However as my internship was in August lots of people were on holiday so at times it got quiet but that was expected.
I was given lots of responsibility which I got involved with from my first week. My colleagues ensured I was satisfied with the level of responsibility given to me before they gave me the tasks. I took control of a few valuations during my time here and assisting in many from start to finish.
In terms of my degree, learning more about the valuation process and understanding the assumptions and figures inputted has helped and will help a lot with my degree. In terms of career, the skills I have learnt include communication between teams, interaction with other companies and commercial awareness. These skills will all assist me in my career.
The Company
There was a great atmosphere in my office. One thing I have learnt about Savills is that there is a great work hard play hard culture. Everyone was very positive in the office and everyone was chatting and happy to help other people which is a very welcoming atmosphere for an inter.
The internship was very well organised for the regional offices. I hugely appreciated and respected how the HR visited you personally to check up on you rather than just calling you. It showed that they do care about the regional teams just as much as the London teams which I found wasn't the case so much for the Insight Week. However, for the internship I felt hugely supported and the internship programme was very well structured and organised. The Graduate Recruitment team at Savills are the best I have ever seen.
Savills have been very invested in me as a person, from my team to HR to other Savills employees in different teams. My team have taught me as if I was joining them as a Grad and I think this is a great mentality because you want to then stick with them and keep learning as you have learnt so much from them already.
Future employment prospects are very appealing. You learn from the current Grads what Savills have to offer when you join, such as networking opportunities and support. Savills go above and beyond to show you what working for a company like them is like and I think that sets you up in a great position when applying.
The Culture
I was the only intern in my office so networking with other interns was difficult. However my colleagues went above and beyond to ensure I had a good 'Savills networking' experience. We went out for drinks in my first week with the whole department and then we went out for lunch in my last week.
The cost of living is high in Guildford as it is an affluent area and there aren't may places to grab lunch. Again a lot of restaurants are closing down around the Savills office so for socialising and networking you have to go further into Guildford or go to London.
I don't think particularly good!
Yes there were great opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. My department are very active and there were many times where they went out for games of tennis, golf, fitness classes etc after work. There were also many activities/sponsored events occurring within Savills that many got involved with.
