The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I was matched to a team based on my skills, I had great achievable but challenging objectives, my team were incredibly supportive and welcoming and there were plenty of intern-focused opportunities to get involved in. It's not a 10 because sometimes the level of organisation was lacking, such as long wait times for travel reimbursements.
At first some of my team weren't sure how useful I would be since the team is full of individuals with decades of experience in a specific technology/business area. However, I was welcomed and as I proved myself with my work I became closer to everyone and received many thanks and praise, to the point where I feel everyone is sad to see me go.
My manager is the best manager I've ever had, no question. From the first day when he made sure I had a place to sit next to him, to explaining his work whenever I had the time to listen, to answering any questions I had instantly and giving me real responsibility, he's made my internship a fantastic experience.
I was more busy in the first half of my internship which worked really well - by the time I had the confidence to ask about further opportunities, I had the time to do them! I was never given so much to do that I couldn't complete it, and whenever I finished my tasks I could always ask to help with other projects.
I think I was given as much responsibility as a full time graduate would have gotten. I led a project with brand new software with my manager acting as an advisor, organised my own meetings, presented my work to my team and colleagues across the bank, and was given free reign to redesign the team's online sharing space.
A lot of what I learned was very specific to the company and area of expertise, but I also developed more general skills which will help me in the future. I picked an internship which wasn't that relevant to my future career goals so someone interested in a career in this area would make use of more of the skills in the future.
The Company
I would have liked there to be more regular social events but overall the atmosphere was great. The dress code was quite relaxed and there were socials once a month. There was a good amount of chatter most of the time and hot desks meant I spoke to a lot of people.
The events and opportunities were really good, but administrative organisation did sometimes let the internship down. We went to London for two days of training and after 9 weeks have only just been sent a link to get reimbursed. Other events we were not given enough information to fully prepare ourselves, or information was provided last minute.
There weren't any formal courses or certificates available for interns but they did a lot of careers focused events and talks, and we got training in London for 2 days at the start of the internship. We were told formal courses were available in all graduate roles. We got buddies and mentors.

I would have taken a job with the company if I wasn't planning on doing a PhD. I really wasn't expecting to like the experience so much but the atmosphere is so encouraging that I would consider coming back after I finish my PhD if I don't find other opportunities more closely related to my degree.
The Culture
We all got on really well, there was always someone to have drinks with at the weekend or lunch during the week. We had socials organised by the company but we also organised our own events. The company set us up with a Facebook group to connect before we started.
I live in Glasgow already so accommodation wasn't an issue. Food and drinks are reasonably priced. The nightlife can be pricey depending on what you're looking for, but there's always somewhere cheap to go too.
Glasgow is great for nightlife. Its one of the best parts of the city.
I think so but I was writing my dissertation at the same time as doing the internship so I didn't get involved in loads. I did go to Glasgow Pride with barclays which was fantastic. I think it would be better as a graduate because there is more time to get involved.
