The Role
I enjoyed my internship very much, I not only learnt a vast amount during the ten weeks but I also had a good time building relationships and producing work I never thought was possible in such a short time. Of course there were un-enjoyable tasks but these were always tasks that were necessary.
I felt very valued by my colleagues: From the beginning I did the crucial daily tasks of the team. My team made me aware that the work I did was very valuable to the performance of the team and really invested in the development of my knowledge and skill set.
I was given a lot of support in relation to the role that I was doing and building my knowledge of what was done in the team. I do think there could have been more personal support in terms of asking what I wanted to get out of internship and helping me explore other teams.
I was very busy on a daily basis with the daily tasks but also lots of other work that I worked collaboratively with my team on. There were a few days that I would have little to do in the afternoon but this was always when this was the case for my whole team.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility, much more than I would have thought coming into the internship. I worked on tasks that then the rest of my team would use daily. I would solve problems on my own and submit the solutions under my name and my signature.
The skills I've developed here (teamwork, inter-personal skills and just overall confidence in a corporate environment) will heavily impact my final year. I will go in with a much more positive attitude to leaving education and starting my career ideally with this bank. Overall, I've showed myself my ability to adapt to situations and get stuck in with little knowledge.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great and everyone was very friendly and encouraging. Not only have I built friendship with the other interns in my department but also I've really had the opportunity to get to know my work colleagues in and out of work. It would have been nice to have seen the same friendliness between the people I worked with and those higher up.
The overall placement was organised pretty well apart from location. We were offered the role at Santander months in advance but were confirmed location until a month before we started. We were asked for preferences but most people in my division didn't get their location. This is similar to how the Graduate Scheme is set up and it leaves students unsure whether they do have an internship because they may not be able to do that location. Also the Charity Challenge seemed to not be well organised, with some groups all in one location and some all spread out.
We had webinars which weren't particularly relevant to my division so although they were interesting, I think it would be more appropriate to do one relevant to either soft skills or each division. In 1-2-1's my managers were very proactive about my personal development and from the start were helping me understand, from the basics, what went on in the department etc.

Very appealing but as mentioned, the lack of confirming location to interns/grads is hugely unappealing. However, I do really hope to be considered for the Graduate Scheme as the place of work is amazing. You will be supported through the qualification and do rotation which would be really valuable. I would very much like to work for Santander.
The Culture
Yes, very good. In my team I was asked for lunch every day and drink weekly. But also there was department wide drinks social during my time here.
I commuted into London and was lucky to stay rent free. However, travel was expensive. The prices were higher than I was expecting but they were probably usual London prices.
Very good, bars all around.
Other than drinking socials, no.
