The Role
Very insightful internship provided broad exposure to the bank and the various products in trading. It was especially useful to have both the in depth learning on the two desks while also learning more broadly by shadowing those on other desks. Great people who were keen to help and teach you, to give up their time
Felt generally well valued. People aim to help and teach you, grads can be particularly helpful and as long as you also show that you are keen you are bound to meet people that want to help you. My work was well received and feels like it will actually be useful and used in the bank
Both very helpful, including 1-2-1 teaching sessions and frequent shadowing, despite being busy people were willing to give up their time to help and teach. The D/MD scheme where you meet directors is also useful as you meet really senior people but they are still willing to have these meeting and talk to interns.
Less busy than I thought I would be, at some points not much work but it allows you to shadow and meet people without worrying that you are having to sacrifice time spent on work/projects. Meant that long hours were not necessary and didn't feel obliged to stay late just to show a face.
In a trading role you are obviously not allowed to trade, and of course not given clients either, this is as expected. But was also given tasks that were useful ongoing projects so I had responsibility in terms of that part of a process. But overall less than expected. Unsure how more could be given
Very much so in work, and very interesting in terms of understanding of financials. May swing my dissertation topic but unlikely to be used in modules. Going forward employment wise this will obviously be heavily used. Will also be useful in helping perspective interns in the year to come as my understanding and explaining ability will be good
The Company
In a trading floor there is a constant buzz but also the people have fun and get on well. Really loud at some points and equities seems quieter as a floor than Fx or Credit etc but this is more a reflection of changing market conditions and regulatory impact. Overall a good buzz and good fun
Structure wise very good. Training then two rotations on two desks is great. Very well structured. Unfortunately some interns were allocated to desks that then do not have headcount at the end, this is a significant downside as many interns will work hard and enjoy a desk to them find it isn't hiring.
Some intern training events and talks on top of initial training. Not a huge amount but not much more could really be done in 9 weeks. I think as a graduate a lot more training and time is given, this makes sense as there is less need to rush given more time is available
Subsidised Canteen
Very appealing, looks very good, well structured, good salary, strong training opportunities. People are fantastic and a big attraction to the roles. Get on well with the teams I have met and can see myself working with them and fitting in well. Obviously a very desirable place to work with great career progression
The Culture
I made a good group of intern colleagues, unfortunately not a huge amount supplied in terms of intern events organized by Barclays which means people meet fewer of the other interns than they could. However greatly enjoyed meeting these new people and will keep in touch with them after, and when they start their jobs
Canary Wharf is obviously expensive. I lived in a rented room from Spareroom.com so was £675 a thus affordable. You will find that your work colleagues generally pay for most things when socializing which is obviously very affordable. And you are well paid as an intern so do not worry
Good bars in Canary Wharf but generally head into London for nights out and things. This is unsurprising and works well as well connected via the jubilee line. Bars etc are fun in the area and team drinks are to be enjoyed. Overall pretty good and structured well to have the clubbing further away.
Not a huge amount. Beyond socializing in bars etc there was no intern sport for example and this would be nice to see. However interns tend to be knackered and it is understandable that many people do not want to play sport etc on a busy worknight, perhaps this could be organized better
