The Role
It has been a wonderful nine weeks started with the introduction session in London Excel and then other training sessions on-sight, including having one to one meetings with directors, in-conversation session with managers from different business areas and etc. I really enjoyed working here and would like to come back to work here after graduation.
The very first meeting with my line manager, he asked what's our preference for the project I was interested, then assigned the tasks based on my opinions. In addition to gaining more hand-on experience, he wanted me to know how valuable was my work and be proud of what I had done. It made me felt that I wasn't here to work merely but did create valuable result.
All colleagues within or outside of my team were so helpful and friendly, they were really willing to put their things done and help you if they weren't crazy busy. I was not alone at any moment whenever I needed some help. I was also assigned a buddy to ask daily common questions and a mentor to guide me about the career path. So basically every intern has three supervisors to help you which was superb!
As a summer intern I had a good work life balance experience at our team, the working hour was flexible and work loaded was completely reasonable. I was not expected to stay late and overwork or so, and I did not have too much dull time in the working hours either.
I think this question depends on the project you are assigned. My project was related to an internal data adaptor service which was not relevant to cooperate with other teams or so. It was a project only used by our team, so compare to other projects the responsibility I ad was not that much.
I have learned a lot during the internship especially to work with people from different cultures, Barclays recruited interns from various backgrounds and I found out teamwork was one of the skills I developed most. In addition, I grasped the knowledge of the technical tools and skills used for the project and the agile development cycle as well. All these would benefit my last year study for sure.
The Company
It was really mixed, I felt like people there worked really hard during the day, and leave the office on time around 4 to 5, not much people stayed overwork which was a good sign of work life balance. Everyone was really friendly and willing to have a chat to help.
It was good, in the first few weeks we were told what kind of meetings, job shadowing or training sessions would be conducted. In addition to that, we also had two times reviews with your line manager where you could raise your concern to him/her to adjust your internship experience.
As a Barclays intern, we had two days training session in London and several online training sessions to complete. And as a developer intern, we had access to Safari books and Pluralsight where we could find tons of online learning resources to grab more practical skills which was really helpful.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
During the internship, everyone would be considered for the future graduate role for next year. The result will be announced on the last day of the internship.
The Culture
There were few social events which were alright, not really exciting.
Glasgow is a city with lower living cost compared to London. You could rent a well flat near the office with a reasonable price easily.
I wasn't really into nightlife so not that aware of it, but the other interns were satisfied with the sub craws.
I wasn't looking for or aware of other opportunities so no comment.
