The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. I learned many new things and had the opportunity to meet a lot of nice and smart people. The trading floor is an open environment and therefore you can speak with almost everyone. Besides the work on the desk, HR organised many additional events in which senior people explained their desk and side-events such as karting. I had a very positive experience.
My colleagues appreciated my input and gave me interesting tasks to work on. They made the time to give constructive feedback, in order for me to learn from the things I did right or wrong. Everyone was very open and could help if I felt stuck in a task or project.
Both the HR and my team gave strong support and guidance. The internship was structured with weekly events in which senior people explained their job (which gave me a good overview of the other classes. I also appreciated the amount of feedback I received in my project. My team supported me to deliver a strong presentation.
In general, every day was different. Every morning I wrote a short news and markets overview. Afterwards, I supported my team in their day-to-day tasks. I created spreadsheets, did research and helped my team with pricing. I always had something to do, and if not, I could always ask where I could help. Whenever I had the time, I went to other desks to learn about different asset classes.
After I understood the general concepts on my desk, I was given more responsibility than I initially expected. I learned from this and found it very encouraging that my work contributed to what the desk did. Especially in my project, I had to opportunity to try and master a complex concept and my team was always ready to support me.
I believe that I developed many valuable skills. HSBC gave the right amount of training. In addition, I had to opportunity to expand my network. Doing the project gave me a deeper understanding of the business and I believe this is a strong part of this internship. I think the internship prepared me well for a job in finance (and even other fields).
The Company
The office atmosphere is open. Almost everyone was open to help and give insight in their job. People treated each other well and worked together across desks. This is a very good thing for interns because it allows you to learn not only about your own desks, but also the desks around you.
The internship is well organised. It consisted of weekly meetings with senior people and other events in which they either trained you or introduced you to new people. Besides this, the evaluation is done in a structured way due to the collaboration of the HR with the managers. In the meetings, good food was always provided.
I believe HSBC continued to invest in me throughout the whole internship. This ranges from the training, the time with senior people and the opportunity to present your project in front of a panel of senior management. This is all achieved due to the strong organisation of the internship.

Very appealing. The company offers successful interns a place in the graduate program. In addition, they gave us the opportunity expand your network, which is also a good thing for future employment prospects. Based on second hand experience, I can say that the graduate program has a good fit with the internship.
The Culture
Yes. We had a fun group and we often went out together. I also met many fellow interns from other divisions in the combined events and the training. It is a strong network on which we can all build in the future. The interns helped each other out with the projects as well.
London is very expensive, and therefore the cost of living is high. I paid around 900 a month for my room but had my own bathroom. Going out is also expensive. However, the internship paid very well, which allowed me to save even though the cost of living was high in London.
The nightlife in London is very good. There are many bars and clubs and you can do something new every week. Often, you pay a high entry fee but then the music is good and the sound is strong. Canary Wharf is also filled with bars and restaurant but can be expensive.
The internship takes up most of the week. But we often finished between 6 and 7 and could do something in Canary Wharf. The hours are reasonable. In general, the weekends were work-free and you could enjoy your own activities during this time. The company has good sport facilities for a low price.
