The Role
It was an incredibly steep learning curve, and an open atmosphere to learn by doing and everyone in my team was more than happy to answer clarifying questions and contextualize even the smallest task.
I felt very much like a valued addition to the team. Continuously sought out feedback on how to improve which also was well received from their end.
To the extent time allowed, my team was happy to take time to support and advice me on how to best complete a task.
My team was understaffed for the duration of my internship which brought the consequence that I got to do a variety of tasks and get plenty of exposure working across deal flows. For me this was ideal as I went into the internship wanting to maximize my learning experience!
As a result of my team being understaffed I got a lot of exposure and responsibility.
This was such an amazing springboard hopefully now moving into a career of investment banking. I am incredibly grateful for HSBC's strengths based interviews that don't weed out suitable candidates that have spent their time adding value to their surrounding through real and diverse activities (as opposed to just cultivating their own interview skills at WSO or any other forum).
The Company
People work seriously hard, generally takes a while to get into the talk but once you do people are incredibly friendly. Piece of advice for future interns: Don't give up.
Generally very good! The programme offers plenty of insight in other product and sector team's through 'lunch and learns' with more senior bankers. The internship project however, could have been setup in a more guided way as little guidance was provided at the same time as many of us are pushing 90+ hours week to our team. As a result it is easy finding yourself overwhelmed with the many aspects of the project that needs to be completed to a satisfactory level.
My team invested heavily in tutoring one-on-one. Only very few actually gets to dig into valuation, which is a shame.
International Travel
Company Parties/Events
The firm is not a bulge bracket, as such not all teams are working on a lot of high-end live deals. However, it is a fabulous place to learn and the rotational graduate programme is a one of a kind in the city. The latter weighing more heavy than anything in my opinion as it gives you a well-rounded banker background and the firm does not just silo you to one very niche product of=r corner of the bank.
The Culture
Yes, an eclectic but very pleasant group of people.
Canary wharf is lovely in the summer, and also cheaper than the inner city of London.
Honestly, I pushed long hours and made it out 3 times during my internship, but don't expect London night life if you are serious about your internship.
There is literally no time.
