The Role
I enjoyed it because I learnt a lot about the industry that I wouldn't have otherwise known, and I got to network across the business and meet with many people. however, at times there was much less for me to do, which was obviously less enjoyable and at times the information I was looking for was hard to find which could make the job frustrating.
I was extremely impressed by the friendliness of the members of my team and how willing they were to give my their time when I needed advice or help with things. I did feel valued and received feedback from the work I did which informed me what was going well and what I could do to further improve
I was given a lot of support and guidance by my management/ supervisors through out the internship which was invaluable in carrying out my work on a day to day basis. however I think there could have been an improvement in the internship wide advice given as often things were unclear and the intern mailbox didn't respond to emails.
i was variable levels of busy or occupied on a daily basis. at times i was extremely busy perhaps when i had a presentation that needed to be sent out for a client meeting the next day but at other times there were definite lulls in my work flow, as mirrored the general environment.
I was given a lot of responsibility at times for example when i was given an annual renewal to do mostly by myself which i was extremely apprehensive about initially but really appreciated the trust my team had in me. at other times i was more in a role of supporting the team with research.
the skills will assist me in all aspects of life especially my degree. for example i was able to develop my skills in team work, diplomacy, how to bring together different ideas within a team in order to compromise and to reach the best group outcome, how to manage my time better, and how to remain punctual
The Company
the general atmosphere in my office was one of enjoyment but working hard, it was clear that the people in the office enjoyed working there and were getting along well with each other, but at the same time it was also obvious that people were working hard. however this never made me feel like i couldn't approach people for help if i needed it
it was not very well organised, however i did not let this get in the way of me enjoying the placement. there was an obvious lack of communication between the people running the commercial banking wide internship and those in charge of it on a business area level. further our induction wasn't until 2 weeks into the placement which didn't really seem to make sense.
in terms of personal training and development the company did invest in the interns through a series of product training sessions where we could learn how as an RM in GC we would come into contact with the different products. there were also webexes, a lunch and learn and a series of emails for how we could make the most of our internship development journey.
The Culture
there were some opportunities to get involved with things outside of work for example as there was a big emphasis on charity work, there were many charity and volunteering events that we as interns were invited to get involved in for example a charity rugby match, and also days of volunteering with into university with alevel and gcse students
