The Role
The internship far exceeded my expectations upon starting. It gave me a fantastic insight into the world of banking and provided me with the platform to really develop my business skills
Perhaps one of the best things about this internship has been the people and how welcoming everyone has been. The amount of time people are willing to give to you for advice is amazing. From the most senior levels of the business, everyone values you completely and wants you to succeed.
From day 1 of the internship you are given the full support of your colleagues and team leader. At times I perhaps wasn't challenged enough however I was open and requested more responsibility. This was taken well by the team and I was given the opportunity to take up additional roles and tasks.
Given the nature of my role I wasn't as busy as the other interns. However this gave me more time to network with colleagues within the business which is a vital skill which you need to develop. Likewise it also meant I could initiate and lead a side project with the other interns.
You are given as much responsibility as you believe you can handle or manage. At first I wasn't challenged enough however I felt I could do more so I spoke to my manager about the issue and this was received well. I was then given more responsibility and was given exposure to more difficult tasks.
The nature of my role was project management. The skills I learned in this role are not only transferrable to my degree, but they're transferrable to any role across any industry that I plan to work within in future. I expected the internship to provide me with experience however I didn't expect it to provide me with as many transferrable skills as it has.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was lively however it depends on what floor you are on. My floor was quieter than most due to the nature of the teams on my floor however this was uncommon. Likewise everyone is open and outgoing so you wont struggle to fit in or struggle to enjoy yourself
The internship was extremely well organised from start to finish. The graduate team keep you on track the full time, ensuring you are aware of all the upcoming events you can attend. In terms of events, the graduate recruitment team organise numerous social events as well as tonnes of lunch and learns so you can learn from experienced colleagues in the business.
International Travel
Upon starting the internship I wasn't overly invested in this organisation. However, now that I have been able to see the work that this organisation is doing, I am extremely excited by the prospects and the opportunities that I could get involved in. Furthermore, the culture in this organisation is something that I believe will really help me grow.
The Culture
There was a great social scene amongst the other interns. We set up a group chat at the start of the internship and you were never short of things to do throughout the 10 weeks. Additionally, the graduate recruitment team organise numerous social events so you can get to know all of the other interns outside of a work environment.
The cost of living was the only negative I could think of in regards to this internship. Unfortunately the cost of living in London is extremely expensive. However, that being said, you are compensated for this with an increase in salary in comparison to other areas of the UK as well as a relocation allowance.
In canary wharf you are spoiled for choice in terms of bars and restaurants. Outside of the office there is an outside bar with a grassy area and 2 large screens which show sports and movies. A short walk away there are countless restaurants and bars that you can sit in as well.
