The Role
Very enjoyable. Felt like I learnt a lot and was doing meaningful work.
Got on very well with my colleagues. Everybody was helpful and gave me a lot of support. People were always happy for me to get involved with the work they were doing helping me to get more experience in different things.
Support always available. Was confident I could ask my manager for help with anything I needed. Same went for other colleagues I worked with.
Always had enough to do. I had a project to work on that always left me with plenty to do when I didn't have other tasks. People always had bits and pieces of work that I could get involved in and help with.
I took responsibilty for 2 of the weekly surveillance tasks and carried them out each week. Also had my project to work on and took an active role in other jobs I was involved in.
The work I have done is quite different to what I do in my degree studies as the job is engineering focussed but my degree is in physics. Similar skills are involved though in terms of problem solving and having done this will be very useful for applying for jobs and if I do similar work in future
The Company
Office atmosphere felt very relaxed. Everyone got their work done but at the same time we were still able to have fun and chat
Onboarding process was poor. Was warned after receiving my offer that I may go a while without hearing anything but frequently went very long periods of time without any update. Wasn't told my start date until a phone conversation with one of my colleagues who was involved in summer placements with him believing I should have already been told by HR. Not given much information in advance about what the job would actually involve After starting things were better. The work I would be doing sorted in and I was quickly able to get involved.
Received the required training for unescorted access to site at the beginning of my placement. No other specific training. Mostly learning things myself related to jobs I was doing and help from colleagues.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Would be interested in working for them again in the future.
The Culture
Made friends with colleagues and would go out and do stuff with them. Leaving meal for an industrial placement student in my department was good fun
Live at home as I am from Edinburgh so not very expensive for me
Working near to edinburgh during the fringe festival so nightlife was good
A few chances to do stuff but not loads of opportunities. Not really done through work and just casual things arranged with colleagues
