The Role
The internship was a fantastic experience which allowed me to grow as a person in many ways. The people were very friendly, the programme was very structured, and the lessons learnt were extremely useful. There was an element of work that was great, and also a focus on socials which was good to have.
The whole team made an effort to go out of their way to make me feel valued. This was done through the time they invested in me, the work they gave, the invitations to socials that were past on, and even through the conversations that we had on a day to day.
It was easy to approach any member of the team, regardless of their position. The support and guidance was always there, but there was also a sense of independence due to the trust that was placed in my work. I always had a point of contact for support on all of my projects.
I always had my hands full and something going on, but at the same time, I had enough capacity to take on project work with the councils at Barclays alongside my day to day. There was never an expectation for me to have/not have capacity and the team was very understanding of my workload. On days where work ran low, there were several tasks and objectives I could meet to fill the time.
I was given a huge amount of responsibility, more often than not, at the same level as the members of the team. This was true both within my team and outside. All of the work given actually added value to the team as opposed to work for the sake of work.
The context and commercial skills that the programme taught me will help me on my degree as I can come back to university and apply some real world knowledge and context to my arguments and discussions. The training will help me in my writing and analysing skills more than anything else.
The Company
The atmosphere was great on a day to day and something that made me want to look forward to work. On occasion, it could be stressful when there was a huge deadline, meeting, or discussion that was about to go down, but it is not something that was bad as it helped with the final output and performance of the team.
The majority of the internship was set up perfectly. There were no issues with anything. The only issue that I did have was to do with system permissions as they took about a week to setup after I had started, slowing down my work, when this was something that could have been done beforehand, though it wasn't really detrimental.
My team invested a great deal in me and gave me training in all the systems I needed. GradRec also invested a great deal, particularly over the three day induction. The bank invested in me in a more generic way through the online trainings and courses too. However, the first two were a lot more useful.

The culture of the company was a huge selling point as I never would have imagined it to be so good. The people are great, the work is naturally exciting due to the area, and the future of the bank looks bright, and so future prospects are very appealing. I have been offered a grad scheme at the end of my internship, as were many others.
The Culture
Everyone got along, had daily conversations, and had several social events. Some were organised by GradRec, others by the interns ourselves. It was a very friendly atmosphere and there was no hostility between the interns, despite competing for the same positions. It was common to see interns working together and helping each other. We have all made life long friends for sure.
As I was in london, living costs were fairly expensive, socialising was not cheap but still affordable, and normal spending was the same as it would be at home. Despite it working out more expensive than most other places, this was taken into account in the pay that we received as interns so it was not an issue. Also a lot of social events were paid for by the company.
Most evenings there was something to do after work. Canary Wharf and nearby areas always have something going on, and it is more down to whether you want to go out than is there anything to go out. Weekdays are rare for nights out but the weekends are perfect.
Yes. I was involved in activities outside of work on a number of occasions. There were outside fo the office and usually had some sort of citizenship element involved. I could get involved in as many as I wanted, though I chose to limit the number of opportunities I was involved in to get more work done.
