The Role
I really enjoyed it. I was able to learn a lot about construction and the tasks required for the project. The team was very welcoming and happy to help with anything that I had questions about.
I wasn't expecting to fit in to the team as well as I did, everyone was very welcoming and treated me as a member of the team despite being a student on a summer placement. I felt tat my work was valued by colleagues and subcontractors as well.
They were more than happy to answer questions and involve me in their day-to-day tasks which allowed me to learn quickly and without feeling like I was a burden.
Depending on the time of the week and the stage of the project I could be very busy, on other days there was less to do so I asked my supervisor for extra tasks to complete.
I was able to take the lead on the health safety and environmental side of the project which meant that I had a lot of interaction with the subcontractors.
The placement was very different to my university studies but I knew that this would be the case when I applied.
The Company
Quite quiet, but I also spent a lot of time on site.
I had tasks to do as soon as I arrived which meant that I felt like a welcome addition to the team.
I had access to the online training portal which meant I could choose any courses I was interested in. I also received an NVQ level 3 whilst I was there.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Travel loan
I have been recommended for a place on the Graduate employment programme which I am definitely considering.
The Culture
I was the only summer placement student working at Heathrow
I commuted from my home.
There was no night life that I was aware of
I took part in a volunteering day and there was opportunity for activities like a rugby tournament.
