The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship, I have learnt an incredible amount in such a short amount of time. The entire Audit team are extremely welcoming and have always been happy to help. I was also invited to the summer offsite which allowed for me to network to people I would not have met otherwise.
Throughout my internship I was given a more or less constant flow of work. Most of this work was used in the final report making the work I was given actually important and valued by the team. As well as inside of work I was also invited to socials which made me feel welcomed and part of the team.
During my internship I asked as many questions as I possibly could, I wanted to gain as much from this 10 week experience as I could. Every time I asked a question my colleagues were always happy to help and not only that but they wanted to help. As long as the intern is proactive then everyone else around is more than happy to support you.
During the first week of each rotation my work load dramatically decreased, as the team need you to get up to scratch with the new environment and the new audit. once you have completed necessary reading the work load increases. I was given a constant flow of work as long as I asked for it.
I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility from the start. The work I was given was mostly important and usually ended up in the final published report. other work included reading and training which was always useful to get up to speed with current Audits. The responsibility grew the longer I was in the team for.
I entered this internship with very little knowledge of excel and left with basic/intermediate and some advanced excel skills, as in Audit, every piece of work I conducted on excel. I have also increased many of my transferable skills such as presentation skills, confidence, written etc. overall this was an invaluable experience.
The Company
The general atmosphere was warm and welcome. approaching everyone in the office was extremely easy as everyone I met was incredibly friendly. This was show cased in myself and my Charity Cohort selling over 1000 raffle tickets for Age UK and Barnardo's by visiting every floor in both London Offices.
The overall internship was very well set up. It allowed for me to experience multiple areas of Audit and also meet almost everyone in the team through various activates such as the CSR charity project and the Summer Offsite organised by top management. As well as audit due to the CSR Project I was introduced to other departments such as Risk and Sales which gave me an insight of other departments
Throughout my internship there were many opportunities to get involved in different parts of the audit as long as you are proactive and ask. Alongside this we also have access to Santander Knowledge which holds multiple online training courses which are optional. Overall if you are willing to be proactive and grab as many opportunities as you can then there are plenty of resources invested by Santander for you to learn and develop.
Working from home
I have had the pleasure of meeting almost everyone in the Audit department and every is very warm and welcoming making the office a very pleasant place to work. As well as the people there are many development opportunities such as qualifications paid for and the online learning platform -Santander Knowledge accompanied by a competitive wage
The Culture
I was only here for 10 weeks we didn't get too many chances to go and explore the night life/ social aspect. However there are three very good pubs/clubs within 5 minute walking distance of the office which is very handy I f you fancy catching up with colleagues outside the work environments/ work hours. Each team also organise socials mainly on Thursday- one being bowling or a meal out at lunch.
London is extremely expensive! Travel was around £1000 for the 10 week placement but the perks outweigh the cons. the experience you gain is invaluable especially for someone without previous office experience as it give you an insight to weather or not London/office work is for you before Woking full time with a £5000 travel card.

Each department/ team organised multiple socials when I was in the team, this including bowling, drinks and a summer offsite - which involved a treasure hunt and a pub quiz. All socials especially the Summer Offsite were great opportunities to integrate with your team but also meet new people and gain more knowledge about the job.
