The Role
GE will tailor your placement to suit your interests at every opportunity they have.
Everyone at GE is extremely friendly, supportive and are eager to help should you have any problems or need any information.
My manager would give me lots of time to talk me through tasks and teach me about how things work in the background. I cannot put into words the amount I learnt on placement.
At times I ran out of work, but by the next week I had absolutely loads to do, so enjoy the quiet moments!
I worked remotely from my manager, so there was quite a bit of responsibility on both sides to make it work. My manager ensured that there was always time set aside for me, and I made sure I did every piece of work to the best of my ability. I was working on projects that have a huge business impact with tight deadlines and with IT leaders across the globe watching.
I learnt laods of technical and transferable skills whilst on my placement. From working on servers to simply communicating to IT Leaders across Europe about a project you are working on. YOu could literally be doing anything IT related which is why its an excellent placement, if you want you can see a broad range of business functions.
The Company
At GE everyone is very busy, but you do find that people would take time out to have a chat and a joke. There are some funny moments that I won't forget.
The assessment centre was run very well. The background checks took a bit of time (these were from a 3rd party company), but everything from GE's side ran very well. I went into see my manager before I started, went through the paper work for university, and had a chat about my interests so my internship could be angled towards what I want to do.
The most investment in development was given by people talking me through the technical aspects of an issue, this could be from application support teams, DBA's in UK, India or in the US and from my manager also. GE also has a learning catalogue on the internet which is full of content from a massive range of subjects. As always, the help is there, but you have to ask for it!

I have applied back to them, but I didn't get through. Maybe I will see them again sometime in the future, but I would love to work for GE again!
The Culture
There are loads and loads of events going on in GE, the interns meet up every 3 - 6 months for official events. I tended to travel a lot so I saw other interns quite often.
Manchester was pretty cheap to live in, you just have to shop around.
There were quite a few pubs and restaurants around with a variety of foods. For clubs I wasn't too far away from Manchester City Centre.
There is always something going on somewhere in GE. In my office there was absolutely loads going on; every other week there was an event.
