The Role
I enjoyed my internship here as it was an extremely useful experience. I learnt a lot of things in my area of Risk which will be useful for me in my future career. Having first hand experience in a company such as this is a wonderful opportunity and will be a strong foundation for my career.
Everyone I spoke to were extremely approachable and it didn't feel like I was a new intern just for the summer but rather part of the team. I was encouraged to speak to new people and find out about their area of work in order to really have a true understanding of what a bank does on a day to day basis.
Excellent! The people here really do take time to make sure you want to achieve your goals for the internship and gain knowledge about the industry. Everyone I spoke to at Santander is extremely supportive whether that be for my work or for advice for my future career, something that is necessary for an intern.
Everyday I knew what I had to do and had a clear plan in order to complete the tasks I had been set. There were times where I wasn't busy because I completed my work early but I was proactive and did the online training to improve my knowledge and understanding.
Throughout the internship there is a great amount of responsibility as you are completing tasks that will help the team with a deal or help the bank as a whole. The more you learn, the more responsibility you have. During my internship I had a project that would help the bank which made me feel highly valued.
The skills I have gained from the internship will definitely help in my degree and beyond as I was fortunate enough to be out in an area of Risk that is close to my modules for third year. Throughout the internship I asked for work related to the goals I wanted to achieve and will definitely come in use in my future career e.g. Excel.
The Company
Everyone at the office are approachable and friendly. People didn't mind going for a coffee to talk about their area of work or to ask for advice for the internship or my career. For someone who is new and lacking experience, it is a great atmosphere to learn and understand what a bank does.
The first few weeks for me personally had some technical issues that were resolved fairly quickly. The weekly 1 to 1 was essential to the internship as I asked for feedback and tried to improve week on week. Its all about learning and improving and I feel this internship did that really well.
There were no seminars for training, there were more practical training. In a bank I think that is better as you learn from the experiences rather than theory. But it is all about being proactive and asking to go somewhere that interests you. It is a great internship to start your career.

Santander is a place where I would love to work as the people are friendly, the work is interesting and it is a fantastic company. I can imagine myself working here on a daily basis. From the internship you have the opportunity to be on the graduate scheme and all the graduates love what they do and the rotations really help them understand and experience different areas.
The Culture
All the interns had a good social scene. It was quite flexible - you don't have to be at your desk all the time. Interns regularly had informal events but most of the time it was organised by the interns themselves. There were no networking events apart from the introductory one.
I was based in London so it is quite expensive.
There were many sports events outside of work and many times employees went to the local bars. The interns regularly went out for drinks and to find out more about each other whilst we are more relaxed. The CSR project brought a lot of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work such as a Sponsored Charity Bike Ride.
