    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was incredibly well organised by the Graduate recruitment team. They worked incredibly hard to ensure we got as much exposure as possible to different areas of the bank. They also put a lot of effort into trying to find the right team for everyone. Really enjoyed being around other motivated, conscientious interns which provided a great support network.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • By the end of the internship you definitely start to feel like you can add something to the team and that is reflected in being given more challenging/important work. Throughout the programme my colleagues made an effort to include me in interesting work/deals, even if it was just talking me through it if they could not let me help.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The graduate recruiters were incredibly supportive and quick to jump into action if/when anything went wrong. The managers, especially the very senior managers, were incredibly generous with their time. Both with regards to giving career advice, talking through pieces of work and also ensuring that we were enjoying the internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy every day. I can probably only count a couple of days where I struggled to find something to do or had to ask for work. Especially considering it is the summer which is a quiet period, there was a lot going on but that was good because it meant you could get involved in more and experience as much as possible.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Considering we aren't qualified and at the start we really don't know anything I would say we get given a decent amount of responsibility. You are given pieces of work to do from the start and it is up to you how much help you ask for when completing. I would recommend asking for as much help at the start as possible as everyone understands that you know very little so is happy to help so that after producing a few high quality pieces of work you'll be given more and more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I don't think anyone at university works as hard as you do on an internship but that's not necessarily a bad thing. But what is brilliant about the internship is that it reinforces this extreme work ethic and you figure out ways to work smarter not harder/longer so you can take those skills back to university. I think, especially if you do an internship between 2nd and 3rd year, the internship will set you up so well for your final year. The first taste of working life also makes you appreciate uni life a little bit more and stops everyone from wanting to grow up so quickly but equally gives something to look forward to after graduation if you are lucky enough to receive an offer.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly, everyone is happy to help and keen to give advice. Lucky if you have an open plan office as can literally go talk to anyone and great to have so many interns on one floor. Definitely a strong team work and comraderie during the late night hours as well.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I do not have one complaint for how the programme was organised. Everything ran smoothly logistically but also everything we did was very interesting and beneficial. The multiple lunch and learn sessions on the different product areas within IB were incredibly interesting and insightful. I am continually impressed with the speakers, and how senior and experienced they are, at all the talks/sessions.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Through all the Lunch and Learn sessions it was obvious they wanted us to learn as much as possible. There are continuous feedback sessions with your line managers and HR throughout the programme monitoring your progress and helping you develop areas of weakness. Very impressed that there was a reinforced attitude of it being a two way street with regards to the bank choosing you but also you choosing the bank.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It would be very exciting to be offered a place on the graduate scheme. The graduate scheme is very attractive as you get to experience 3 rotations in different teams. There is also the option after the grad scheme has finished to join the Mobility programme and do a 3 month rotation abroad (HK, NY etc) or wait a few years and then do a 6 month rotation.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a great support network amongst the interns, especially during the football world cup this summer. It was great to go out for drinks/dinner etc as well as have fun at the Mid-Internship Go Karting social. The teams are very kind and include you in their social events as well.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home so did not have to worry about cost of living but there are multiple food places for lunch everyday. Would recommend monitoring what you are spending and try a lot of places in your first couple of weeks so you can figure out where you like and where is good value for money. Socialising isn't outrageous in Canary Wharf, same as anywhere in London I would have thought.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't go for more than drinks after work as had to commute home but know that other interns did and they really enjoyed it. Especially if you live close to the office then it is definitely fun and worth doing. Canary wharf does have more of a nightlife than people may expect but still easy to get to the city and other areas.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes they had multiple events such as cricket matches, dragon boat races, runs etc that they actively encouraged the interns to get involved in. Depending on how much work was on you still had the opportunity to do your own thing at home with your friends or go out for dinner etc.
