The Role
The people I worked with were very helpful, friendly and approachable. I was made to feel like a part of the team from the very first day.
Incredibly valued, I was able to help my manager on some complex tasks and provide a fresh perspective on a variety of issues.
My manager was always on hand to answer any questions, and was always happy to help me. He always took the time out to explain things that I was struggling to grasp, and supported me through every task I was given without being overbearing.
Initially I wasn't very busy, but as the weeks progressed I was gradually given more responsibility. I have never felt overwhelmed or stressed with the quantity of work I've been given.
I've been given a fair amount of responsibility, I've taken ownership of updating certain logs and boards for our project. With all tasks that I've been given, I've been given the space and trust to approach them how I wish to. It's been difficult to give me abundant amounts of responsibility because the project I'm working on is 3 years long and I'm only here for 10 weeks.
The internship has really made me aware of my need to improve how I prioritise certain tasks. It has also helped me to gain confidence in asking others for assistance- everyone really is happy to help. The internship has made me less nervous about the transition from studying into working.
The Company
People are focused on work throughout the day, however everyone is incredibly friendly. When asking questions to my colleagues, I have never been made to feel like I am disturbing them. Most people are more than happy to take the time to talk to you about their career journey and impart advice.
The application process was very disorganised and communication was incredibly frustrating. Initially I was put off by the application process. However it is in no way a representation of how well the actual internship is organised. My manager and buddy both called me well ahead of the internship to prepare me and answer any questions I had. The structure of the internship was clearly communicated to me on my first day, and my team were fully prepared for taking on an intern.
I had weekly 121's with my manager to review my performance. These highlighted my strengths and areas for improvements. Most of my personal development and training has been organised by my manager, not the overall internship. If you're looking for personal development training, it's worthwhile speaking to your manager directly, as this is not something that is given to all interns automatically.
Subsidised/Company Gym
I would be happy to come back to Santander as a graduate. There seems to be a good work life balance for graduates, and graduates are pushed and challenged.
The Culture
Santander did not organise/subsidise any social events for the interns.
I lived at home during the internship.
The nightlife isn't the most exciting!
There are sports clubs that are available to join, but they are generally promoted through word of mouth. I was invited to a charity 'Discovery Day' where I joined members of my team in painting classrooms at a local school. This was a great way to bond with different members in my team.
