    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was really interesting and at times challenging. Good to keep you busy throughout the placements, rather than just shadowing one of the employees here for 3 months. The work was something the company was genuinely interested in developing, and so we had plenty of support from the outset.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I joined 2 weeks after the rest of the interns. I had no problem fitting in and working with them for the remainder of the placement. I had no trouble finding help if I needed to ask anything. All of the staff here are more than happy to help. They give you a 'buddy' that you can ask informal questions to things you perhaps wouldn't ask others. You also get a personal mentor, where they check up on you and help guide you through the process of joining and the work environment.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At no stage in the internship did I think I didn't get enough guidance or support. We had the other interns to ask questions to, a buddy, a mentor, our line managers, HR. Everyone was happy to help with any questions you had. This is very helpful to have because at the beginning of the placement you do tend to ask a lot of questions. and knowing there are people you can ask puts your mind at rest.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most of the time we were fairly busy. Not too light on work that you thought it was boring or could have done more, and not too much work that you thought it was too much. There was a descent amount of work, and when you are working as I did in a group of 8, there is always someone around to help you out, and in turn you can help others out if you yourself find you're light on work. The addition of flexy time meant that if you did have a busy week one week and worked long hours, you could gain this time back the following week by having shorter days.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From the outset we were given a lot of responsibility. The work was split into sections and each of the interns were given a section of this to do. It was your job to ensure that what you were doing matched up with everyone else's work, in order to ensure it all worked correctly at the end when presenting back to the department. For many of us, this was our first taste of real responsibility on a project, but there was always plenty of guidance and our line managers checked up on us enough to keep us on track or give us some guidance on new work we weren't used to.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • we were given all the relevant training on software that we needed. we then developed these software skills throughout the placement. It was good to learn something new and then apply it, rather than at uni, learn something new and never touch on it again. We also got micro-sessions to learn about what others did within the company, as well as a trip to another MBDA site to see what work is done in other parts of the country.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was relaxed. I never felt I couldn't handle it. We were in it as a team the whole way and helped each other with things that we found difficult and vice versa. The HR department were also very helpful if you had any questions about anything, so, yeah, relaxed.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised. You could tell this wasn't their first summer placement team. From the outset we were introduced to each other, where everything was. We had a good amount of time to familiarise yourself with the new work environment before the real work began. I found that particularly useful. They also do feedback sessions at the end of the placement, so if there was anything you wanted improving, you can suggest it, and I believe that they honestly would do their best to implement the change.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Well it was a paid summer internship if that's what you mean by investing. They trained us up to work in the manner that they would expect their graduates and all staff to work to. Got us used to the methods they use, trained us up in the relevant skill sets needed to complete the work. Gave us micro sessions to see what the company was about. Overall I was very happy with this.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They are very appealing. They tend to use this summer placement as like an extended interview to see how you work in their work environment, and then they tend to offer people graduate places if that is what you wanted. The flex time is a big incentive, rather than working the 9-5 shift, you can change you day and get up later or finish earlier, its up to you. That helps when making plans outside of work for sure.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We all worked well together if that is what you mean. But people tend to commute into work from nearby towns etc so it wasn't as if we all lived really close by.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living is what you would expect being so close to London. Expensive. My rent was £400 a month for living in great Ashby in Stevenage. This is similar prices to what other people have been paying. But considering that the placement is either 10, 11, or 12 weeks depending on what you chose, that is over £1000 gone just in rent already.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I wouldn't say there was a nightlife to be honest. Many of the graduates and employees don' t live in Stevenage, they live in nearby towns and cities and commute it. Stevenage is a new town, it has a good leisure part with everything you could expect from one. But not much on the nightlife side of life.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to go on social societies, however I think they were aimed at the graduates and full time employs rather than summer interns. The Stevenage site has a Campus sort of vibe to it. There are societies you can join, and you can get involved in charity work as well.
