The Role
I can say that my time at Samsung has been extremely enjoyable. Even as a placement student I received my right share of responsibilities and I can truthfully say that the work that I have been doing had an actual impact. Also, for a one year placement I believe I have learned a very big amount and am very thankful for that.
My teammates never even brought up me being a student when it came to work. I was treated as if I were a Full time employee. I also seemed to befriend most of my team as we had similar interests and many work related discussions which has been very enjoyable.
My first few months were dedicated to learning everything that my job entails. Questions were met with a smile and a lot of support was provided for whenever a dead end was met. After a few months I managed to get up to speed on the day-to-day work and the support provided has been very useful.
The role entails a lot of different fields of work and knowing that the company is Samsung it of course means that there is a lot to be done. Every now and then I would have days where I would be forced to have lunch at my desk but these were not too common. In general it has been busy but manageable.
I was surprised to how much responsibility has been given to me (albeit this progressed with time as my manager and colleagues noticed that I am up to speed and capable of handling things on my own). Seeing as this was a placement I was pleasantly surprised that I was given actual meaningful work!
My degree has a link to the work I have been doing (that being mobile comms). This has helped me to a certain degree as I have had a course that was directly related to communications. In my 3rd Year I will have a course directly called "Mobile communications" and I believe this year will help me immensely in understanding the subject ahead.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was pleasant. The relevant team is always working to keep the mood in the office as nice as possible (that being via listening to people on what changes should be made like dress code, layout extra facilities etc.)
Samsung have their own placement/graduate scheme which entails additional activities / meetings / workshops for students to learn a bit more about how a work environment works. I believe that this has enriched the experience.
