The Role
I enjoyed working at Canon Medical Research Europe very much. It was a great project which was not only enjoyable but also challenging. I also liked working with the people in the place. The place is great workplace with a lot of great people who are willing to help when needed. I had a lot of fun working here. Great offices with all the necessary facilities and of course a fully stocked cookie jar in every kitchen :)
I was included in daily stand ups of the team and participated in all the necessary discussions. I was generally treated as every other member of the team. I was never told by my supervisor that I have to do something, but rather we would debate the issue at hand and come up with a solution. I was treated as a regular Software Engineer. I also received a good feedback from my supervisor.
I received valuable help from a lot of people across many teams. As the nature of my project required me to work on stuff developed by other teams. Generally, I received support any time I asked for. As for guidance my supervisor did a good job at that, by explaining all the necessary stuff for the project but also by introducing me to some new ideas and practices common in Software Engineering.
As I was working on quite large project I had always something to do. My work would keep me busy whole day, being it design, development, testing or researcher. Due to the nature of my project, I could always work on something while I was waiting for response from someone or was waiting for additional resources, being it code repositories or access to certain systems
I was introduced to what the project should be about and what the goals are, but otherwise I had freedom of deciding how to design and implement my work. Often, I would then discuses this with my supervisor but ultimately it was up to me to decide how do I want to proceed.
I have gain great experience working in software engineering environment. I have also delved deep into C++, more than ever before. I have also gained more experience using version control software’s and some occasional python scripts for gradle builds. have learned a lot of new skills in software development. All of this will surely be helpful in my further studies and future work.
The Company
It was quite laid down, yet still professional. Everyone was at ease and joke about while continue on working. There was never a time when the office atmosphere would became unpleasant. Everyone is rather pleasant and open to conversation, being it about job related stuff or something different all together.
The internship had clearly defined time scale as well as all the terms and conditions. The project was well structured with defined goals and targets to meet. The communications between me and the company was clear and easy. I believe this internship was very well set up and organised. And clearly there was a sufficient preparation for my intern project.
While there was no formal training session I did had access to all the company resources and learned a loot while working on the project.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I would like to come back working for this company. I really enjoyed working on my project, in which I learned a lot of new skills. And I also enjoyed working with the people on the team I was assigned to. And I believe it would be great if I could get a job here again.
The Culture
We had a couple of team lunches and some company events. One day every week there would also be a bunch of employees playing boar games during lunch. Which for me personaly is enough of a social scene.
Not sure as I did not live in Edinburgh during my placement but was traveling from Stirling every day. But in terms of food, there is plenty of spaces to go for lunch. There is Tesco close by as well as variety of different fast-food and restaurants to chose from.

There were some charity events happening during the summer.
