The Role
Working in an engineering role I was immediately given responsibility to develop and manage a section of a large global project. I was excited to come to work on a daily basis and learn something new about the technology stack we were using. The project was very important to the bank and this made me feel extremely valued in my team.
I always try to solve problems myself, however, some challenging aspects appeared from time-to-time and my team were always available to ask questions to or provide me with an avenue to speak with a subject matter expert. We all met daily to track our progress and review each other's progress or decision making.
We were given a mentor and buddy along with our manager's to regularly discuss progress and to gain further networking avenues in the bank. This was useful to gain time with senior leaders or ask why certain processes exist. The recruiters were available to speak with throughout both in person and through other means.
I felt busy nearly all the time, but occasionally I had a major blocker and had to fill my time with other tasks. The bank has great training resources which you can use to learn about new technology in the bank. Most interns felt their manager was open to when they work as long as enough time is given to your projects.
I was given a good amount of responsibility which made me work harder and feel valued in my team. Managers will provide you with more if you are skilled and display a willingness to learn in your role. If the internship was longer, I believe I would be given more projects running in parallel.
The bank is moving to a very agile work environment, so this will be useful for future projects to maintain high-frequency development. If you can write software or operate on a bank's technology platform, then you will be able to work anywhere due to the secure banking requirements found in the industry.
The Company
Very professional, however people spoke to each other and made each other's day more fun. Friday was always something to look forward to since people would go out after work or have group lunches. Everyone was open to helping each other and I felt like I could go to any colleague to learn more about the bank.
We were all given access to an app with details of all interns and our daily schedule for events. This made it easy to network, receive messages from recruiters and remember everyone's name! The recruitment process was seamless and realistic which made everyone try more. This made the assessment centre's very competitive.
We received very good initial training ran by professional external trainers along with on-the-job training in our own teams. If returning to the bank as a graduate, I would like to see training being offered to gain professional certifications to develop our knowledge further. This is useful for colleagues who work with regulators and auditors on high-risk roles.

You can rise the ranks of the banks by being passionate about your work and always looking to learn more by doing different roles across your career. The bank looked like it had very good internal mobility for colleagues wishing to try something new. Senior management was always positive in your ability to become board level staff in the future.

Canary Wharf is expensive, but it's London so there are great alternatives locally.
A great number of volunteering days available by just signing up. You were free to choose more than one day per year!
