The Role
The internship was a really good experience! It was perfectly organised. Before the internship even began, the interns were introduced to eachother on a whatsapp group with was a really good ice breaker. An induction day was also held in Leicester where we met interns from all divisions (i.e Risk, Finance, Corporate). Also the culture in the bank was a huge factor to why I enjoyed my internship.
My team was great. They made me feel welcomed and introduced me to as many people in the bank so I know familiar faces and it was also a great opportunity to network. They gave me enough work to challenge myself and actually bring something to the team rather than shadowing someone throughout my entire time here. I felt valued as I was given the responsibility to carry out independent projects that in turn brought value to the bank.
I was given guidance and support by my line manager. Every week we had a 1-2-1 to go over the work I had produced throughout the week. I was provided with feedback on areas where I performed well and where I can improve. This helped me integrate into the work environment.
On a daily basis I was quite busy. There were some days where you're sitting down twiddling your thumbs, but one thing I learnt during my time here is that when you finish the work that you have been set, you should take the initiative and ask for more.
At first, I wasn't given much responsibility, as I was still learning about the different roles on what my team actually does. Although once I learnt the terminology and role my team performs I was set tasks where I had to carry out independent projects.
From my time in Santander, I have developed excel skills and how to analyse large volumes of data.
The Company
The atmosphere was very relaxed. The culture in Santander is very different from other firms such as J.P Morgan. you feel more comfortable.
It was very well organised. Every day I had a task set for me or people to meet to increase my network. Also during the internship there was a charity project where teams of interns had to compete on who could raise the most money for Santander's Charity partners Age UK and Barnado's. It was great fun and healthy competition. It was also organised really well.
My line manager invested a lot of time in my to increase my personal development.
I would definitely return to Santander. The future employment prospects are very appealing. the graduate scheme for SCCB is very interesting as you have 4 six month rotations in totally different fields in the bank which lets you explore what field will be best suited for you. You also learn a lot during your time in the rotations as I have spoken to a few graduates, and they mentioned how it helps your development within the bank.
The Culture
There was a good and healthy social scenes amongst all the interns. It's was one of my favourite things during my time hear. You make really good friends, everyone's really nice and in the same position as you.
It was not an issue.
I never really had to stay late, my team never let me stay past 5:30 even if I wanted to.
There was a charity project which the interns participated in. Also I did go out with the interns and my team many times for drinks or to eat.
