About You
I loved the insight whilst working at Arup, I learnt a great detail about the engineering world and all the staff I worked with were very welcoming and helpful. This experience I had over the summer has only made me even more motivated to get a good qualification. I hope I can go back in the future.
All the people I worked with in my team were incredibly helpful every day of my placement. There is nothing more they could have done for me.
I received a lot of support when I first joined. However I found that sometimes, the people I work with aren’t at the office or are very busy and it is therefore difficult to get support at times.
I have not yet started my degree. However this has defiantly helped me choose what I will go to study in the future for sure.
The Company
I would say the structure was very good. This is because I got to learn a mixture of things during my placement, not just one specific thing, which broadened by knowledge.
The general atmosphere in the office was very calm most of the time and easy for me to get work done.
I would say the firm which I worked for trained me in the correct manor. All the information which I learnt was beneficial to me and not useless training.
I got a very good understanding of what it would be like to work for an engineering company such at Arup. It has also made me appreciate the difficulty of being a civil engineer.
I learnt during my placement that the culture of Arup is very professional with a general positive moral across the office.
It was very relevant. This is because I have not yet gone to university and have not chosen my course. This has helped me understand what civil engineering actually involves.
Everything Else
I was paid on an hourly contact during the duration of my placement.
Yes, I spent a fairly decent amount of time meeting and talking to everyone in my geotechnical team of about 8 people. I also met other vacation students.
There wasn’t really any social event opportunities which I can recall.
I heard that the were activities outside of work from a colleague. However, there were no activities happening during my placement.
If my friend was interest in engineering, I would defiantly recommended it if they lived close. However I lived about an hour away and would perhaps not recommend it as it requires lots of travelling and commitment.
