The Role
I enjoyed my internship very much. I was given the opportunity to do a variety of different activities, from doing project modelling work and design to visiting sites. I have also enjoyed working as a part of a larger team and being able to work with a number of different people.
I did feel valued by colleagues, I found that they made a lot of effort to keep me feeling involved and have helped me to get the most possible out of this internship. Additionally, the staff are very friendly and accommodating in a way that makes it possible for you to ask for further help etc.
I was given a good idea of what to expect from my internship prior to starting by management, however, most of the work I carried out was done with support from other members of staff. I did not feel that I needed more support specifically from management, as I was given support where necessary and usually I only required some support from the member of staff I was working with at the time.
This was frequently very different on a day to day basis. Generally, I would have liked to be more busy but I also feel that this was fairly unavoidable. I particularly enjoyed the days when I was kept busy all day, or with a few smaller tasks to add variety. I found staff to be accommodating for times when there was little work.
I did have some responsibility, however, I felt sufficiently supported by staff as, prior to starting, I was concerned about being overwhelmed with the change as I have only finished the first year of my degree. In some instances, I felt that I could have had more responsibility but for the vast majority of the time, it was great.
I have learnt a number of things that I think will be very important to my degree, particularly use of software as I had had little opportunity to do any kind of modelling work and so I think this will be a significant advantage whilst continuing my degree and i feel that these skills can be developed to beyond studies.
The Company
The general office atmosphere was great, it was very welcoming and the staff are all very friendly with each other. There are a lot of out of office activities that take place and there seems to be absolutely no animosity in the office. Definitely one of the best team experiences I have had.
It was fairly well organised, it seemed fairly difficult to organise due to the nature of the work being very up and down, however, I think the training models could have been better organised as they staff had some trouble finding them
I would say that the company invested a significant amount in personal training and development, that always seemed to be the priority, I feel like this as the team members made an effort to help me complete a range of tasks rather than becoming good at one task that I could complete for projects.
I would say that the future employment prospects within the organisation are very appealing, the company has such a nice atmosphere and the work is so personal development orientated through out the team and so I would definitely like to have the opportunity to return once I have completed my qualifications.
The Culture
There definitely is a good social scene among colleagues, they frequently spend lunch times together and seem to enjoy celebrating the end of a project together. However, as someone that cannot attend these types of events, I did feel a bit more excluded from that, but finding tasks that are 100% inclusive is possibly an impossible task.
The cost of living for me did not change as I remained living in Derby for my internship and chose to commute. The socializing costs in Nottingham are significantly more expensive than other places, and unless I was going to student orientated venues, I found things to be too expensive.
There is a good nightlife in Nottingham, and there is definitely a good variety of nightlife, as I like alternative events and to put on events with local bands, there is always a surplus of opportunities for a young band. Whilst the city is expensive, most of the venues are worth it.
There are many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, unfortunately, I was not able to attend most of these activities, due to being very busy or otherwise. I feel that the amount of opportunities presented were more that sufficient and shows that the team all get on well.
