    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Although the team I was placed in was not what I would place myself in, the work that I completed in my time with the company was educational. Furthermore, I was allowed to shadow other teams that I would have rather placed myself in to see what they were working on, so that if I were to come back to the company, I would be able to request to be put in another team if I so wished.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so. Everybody made themselves available for help at any time that I needed it. Furthermore, everybody in the team tuned in to the final demonstration of the intern project that I was working on. I was made very aware that all I had to do if we needed help was message somebody, and I felt fine in doing so.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everybody in the internship with me received constant support on an interpersonal level by mentors that we were allocated, the HR team, and recruitment team. Furthermore, I was told that I could approach my manager at any time with any questions, no matter how big or small, and they would do their best to answer them.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Every day there were new tickets being added and new work to complete. There was even extra work that I could do if I saw fit. I was constantly being encouraged to make things better if I had the time. Even though there was always something to be done, I wasn't ever expected to stay late, which is fantastic.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Between myself and other interns in my team, we were given a full project that we worked on from start to finish. This meant that we were given a lot of responsibility as there was nobody else directly working on the project with us. I wouldn't have had it any other way, as I really felt as though I directly made a difference in this way.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In my internship, I learned about new and old technologies that I had never worked with before in my studies, which has added significant value to some core skills that are needed in computing science. Furthermore, I got first hand experience at how a corporate technology environment operates, which is something that I would have never gotten without interning. The skills I have learned will better me in any career path I choose.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Although we were in a very hard working space, the environment was surprisingly laidback, which really had a great impact on the energy of the employees. People would laugh and joke with each other throughout the day but still always meet their final deadlines without a hitch, which is fantastic.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Before I started the internship, I didn't hear from my manager while everybody else had heard from theirs until a day or two previous to me starting. This set me up with the impression that things were going to be disorganised but this really was the only bad experience with organisation that I had. Once I was in the building, everything ran smoothly in terms of organisation.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The other interns and I were given full access to extensive technical and non-technical training videos and learning resources throughout the period of our internship. These materials weren't just specific to the role that we were working in, but extended further than that. This meant that we could also take the extra time to look into things that we had an interest in, even if this wasn't what we were primarily working in.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    Healthcare from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. The technology opportunities within the company are only growing more and more. Because of this, I would be very happy to come back into the organisation as a full-time employee after graduation, since I have first hand experience of how broad the roles are that are offered to employees. JP Morgan actively offer those that do well positions to come back after graduation.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely. Networking and social events were arranged by JP Morgan themselves for the interns and grads to get together and go and do something. Even outside of events organised officially, there were always opportunities to get together with people and do something, since we were in such a fantastic area in the middle of the city. There was also social clubs that existed between employees, which again encouraged networking.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very low, considering I live here already. Compared to other cities in the United Kingdom, Glasgow is probably the cheapest place to live with a JP Morgan office that I know of. There are always good offers and nights out to go on that are cheap, due to the volume of students in the area.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Since the office is in the city centre, it is only a short stroll away from some of the best places to go out for drinks or other activities like bowling, rollerskating, comedy clubs, and more. There's always something to do that's within arm's reach, which makes Glasgow a great place to live and work.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Definitely. As I have mentioned before, there was always a group of people that wanted to do something outside of work, whether that be something to do with sports or just going out for a meal and a drink. This really created a more friendly environment and encouraged me to get to know my colleagues.
