The Role
The programme is extremely well structured, a lot of time and planning was invested in making sure the ten weeks were varied, challenging and informative. My internship role (non rotational) was supported by a variety of events that helped me get: 1) get a deeper understanding of J.P. Morgan 2) opportunity to develop a good network should I return to the firm
The team I worked in valued me greatly, I felt welcome and all the teams (irregardless of their geographical location) were kind, approachable and helped me get to grips with my teams responsibilities and my role. There was never a sense of a strict hierarchy, we always worked as a team.
I had weekly one-to-one with my manager and I was able to get time in the diary with HR recruiters when necessary if I ever had any issues. With the general team, I got to work closely with different interns, Analysts, Associates, ED's and MD's across the different tasks and projects I worked on. Not only did my manager give me day-to-day support and guidance, so did my manager's manager....and their manager too.
I had my daily BAU tasks and also other projects I worked on throughout my internship. Generally speaking, this was a very manageable level of work load. Most interns (across divisions) either had either very little to do, or had periods where they kept their head down and got their work done. This should be expected on an internship. Towards the end, there was a lot of spare time and most work loads peaked at the 7/8th week.
I was given a lot of responsibility as my work was basically what my team did. I learn by being able to be responsible for transactions and projects that gave insight into what my team do and how they do it. It was nice to be given that level of trust as an intern.
The Company
Surprisingly it was very calm, relaxed and quiet on the non-trading floors. Trading floors obviously have a louder and more lively working atmosphere. The 7th floor with Starbucks/Canteen was much more lively at busy peak times. Generally the atmosphere is free from distractions, apart from the odd TV on the wall.
Very well organised throughout. From Week 1 to Week 10, you could tell a lot of time and effort was made to organise things - never once did the scheduling, organisation or timetabling slip up. We had a variety of events and presentations that helped me understand the wider division, the firm and also future opportunities beyond the internship. For example - socials, graduate panels, senior leader breakfast, business-specific presentations. All events were very well executed as attendance was mandatory.
There was some initial training at the start of the internship but beyond that, this was more undertaken by my manager within my specific role. However we got to understand more about the qualification that we would study on the Graduate Programme and the week's training at the start of the graduate programme.
Healthcare/Dental
Got extended a job offer for their three year Graduate Analyst programme, with the potential to be promoted to Associate after my second year. Future prospects look very strong, granted you finish the programme and complete the qualification. Where you end up after completing your rotations depends on what roles are available.
The Culture
Made some great friends on the internship, some of the HR organised events helped me initially meet other interns but as I got to meet interns more and more through other events, we all developed our social circles and a close group of friends to meet up for lunch or after work.
It's London - so you know what to expect. Thank god for Tesco.
There is no nightlife in Canary Wharf, just some decent bars and restaurants.
There was a CSR day, that was it.
