The Role
The department I worked with and my colleagues were very friendly, welcoming and inspirational. I consider the experience I gained at J P Morgan invaluable and it helped me build my confidence that I can become a good developer. JP Morgan make many catered social and networking events for their interns and there are many out of work activities to always keep you busy.
My colleagues entrusted me with building on top of one of their projects. It was a lot of responsibility to fulfill their user requirements but I also had a lot of freedom with the design and how I could solve the problems I faced. I feel like I really left my own touch on the project and am very happy with the work I managed to do in such a short timeframe
My deppartment supported me with any work issues I encountered. I had weekly meeting with my manager. He was very friendly and approachable. I could talk informally to him about anything that was concerning me. If I couldn't understand a technology I was working with - the rest of my colleagues were just an arm's reach.
There isn't really someone who keeps track of if you are Infront of your computer. The great thing is that of you deliver what is required of you - you are free to take it easy and there are many groups and learning activities for advancing your learning. I wanted to experience as much as I could and there was always something to keep me busy. If you are motivated and take up too much responsibility - be prepared to work more than eight hours a day. It all depends on you and The fact I kept my schedule full is not a bad thing at all.
My main responsibility was concerned with working on my front end project and delivering as much functionality on it as I could. Outside of that there was cyber security training - available to all interns that ended with a competition. Another responsibility I had to think about was devoting hours of work to an innovation project that anyone can join
I believe the skills I learned at the internship were invaluable. The internship gave me a new perspective of what programming skills are important for me to develop for a big company. I had to quickly learn new skills which weren't covered in my university modules but it was a pleasant experience and now I know what tools are used in a professional environment
