The Role
I really enjoyed it. The people were all so lovely, whether it was the other Interns, our Managers and teams or our Mentors. There were lots of networking events so we could speak to really interesting people that work for the Company, and find out about the different opportunities the Company offers.
Very much so. The team would often tell me that the work I was doing was just as important as some of the work they were all doing. They were more than happy to give me help and advice as well if I was ever stuck or needed it, which was really useful! They always had time to ask how I was doing and made me feel very comfortable.
There was a good balance between letting me get on with my work and seeing what I could do, and then helping me when I was stuck or there was an issue with the actual computer itself. I felt like I was not afraid to ask for help when I needed it.
To begin the internship, I wasn't very busy due to lots of waiting around for access to certain parts of projects that I would be working on. However, there was lots of training needed to be done so I got on with that for the first week or so. After all of that was sorted, I ended up being pretty busy every day.
I wouldn't say I was given much responsibility, however I didn't come from a strong programming background therefore wouldn't have expected to be given as much. We were expected to give a presentation to important people in the Company about the work we had been doing however.
I haven't started back at University yet, but I feel the skills I picked will help me a huge amount. Just being able to ask lots of questions and having people there to help every day made a huge difference to my programming skills. Watching other people code really helps you pick up different tips and tricks you may not have otherwise known.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and nice. Different team members brought in food and offered it around the team most weeks which was lovely. We also had coffee breaks with different team members and learnt more about them as people. Everyone was very approachable and helpful, which was lovely to be around.
Very well organised. There was a well planned first day where we had talks from different members of the Company. From there, we were introduced to our Managers and had a clear project set out for us. Due to there being over 100 interns, and every person had a clear idea of where they should be and when, I feel the organisation was superb.
The Company introduced us to a website where we could build on our skills in any of the programming areas that we wanted. They also had the Secure Code Warrior, where we took part in challenges to increase our code security skills. I feel both of these really improved my programming ability.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
At this moment, I would say very appealing. The working environment is so great, I would love to work there. All the workers I met seemed very happy at work and the location of the office is great. There is a clear structure in hierarchy in regards to promotions and job opportunities.
The Culture
I went in not really knowing anyone, and ended up making a big group of friends which was lovely. We made plans every week to do things after work, and had lunch together most days. We even mixed well with the graduates, who had started working full-time with the Company.
The cost of living was fine. I already had a flat in Glasgow due to being a Student here so it was great for me. Socialising in Glasgow is always fun, and the prices are a lot cheaper than most cities so it is very easy to have a good time without spending too much.
The night life is really good in Glasgow. The office is right in the centre of the City which makes it easy to make plans after work. If you ever wanted to do anything in the evenings after work, there is something on every day which is nice and makes it a lot easier and quicker to make friends.
There were lots of clubs that the Company offered. We were only there for 10 weeks however so it was difficult to get too involved in anything as we knew we wouldn't be there very long. If I was to come back, I would definitely get more involved in them.
