The Role
In terms of the programme, it was great. Got to experience technology within the finance sector and learned lots about technology in industry along best practices. Knowledge on corporates and the business side of technology was also very useful. In my particular experience however, it felt like some of the tasks were more to get the intern out of the way so it was a bit demotivating. Regardless, the tasks still managed to allow me to jump through all the learning hoops, from start to finish which was good. Overall, would want to experience it again.
Started off intimidated by them but slowly got to know each and every member of the internal team. Was welcomed at the start by most members but some seemed busy with business as usual tasks (understandable). Felt like help was there when needed. Other people within the firm were also nice and helpful when contacted via the internal communication channels.
My managers kept on pushing me, every time I had achieved something, my next workload would increase in quantity and difficulty which is good for progression. When problems arose, manager was understanding and suggested members within the team to consult or schedule a meeting. Had regular discussions regarding career and career progression.
Was kept busy most of the day. Personally think it was too much work for an intern and that most others may struggle. This was my personal experience and seemed like target I set for myself, most other interns seemed to have a lot of free time. I would have appreciated some scheduled free time to purposely network with people or join in events (say one hour per week). There was probably more freedom if I consulted my manager about it but was a bit intimidated given the workload that was given and not meeting deadlines.
I had my own project so I was completely responsible for that. This however wasn’t a business priority so the responsibility is negligible. I also was given a few BAU tasks in the later weeks when I got more experience and awareness, which were relatively important. It was about the right balance, but had room to take on more responsibility.
Can’t even quantify it. Learned so much technical and business that the university degree could never begin to cover. Was a great stepping stone towards a career in technology, would strongly recommend it to everyone in my position.
The Company
Was pretty serious majority of the times, but still had time for casual talks with colleagues. Was able to take breaks when necessary. Overall was very pleasant.
There seemed to be a lack of communication with HR. This was pretty understandable as the members of HR were also new this year.
Pluralsight was available. Not much else to comment as it wasn’t really applicable. Members within the team would give up their time to get me updated (they would with any other team member that asks)
Working from home
Large firm with big connections.
The Culture
Multiple socials throughout the internships. Made good contacts for the future.
The firm could’ve helped with accommodation better. For individuals it was very difficult to find accommodation, and that accommodation was very expensive (bulk bookings would have made it cheaper), especially because it was only for 10 weeks. My accommodation in particular was also only 9 weeks so had to find another place on the 10th. Accommodation was the worst part of my experience. Even with lower financial compensation, firm sorting out internship accommodation would be preferred.
In the summer, most of the students are absent. There are many tourists but nightlife during the time period I was there was poor.
Lots of little communities one could have joined.
